I'm at Maple. How far is it a drive for me to come and meet a pup?

I'm so sorry. You sound like you're beating yourself up over it a bit, but it's not your fault. You sound like an incredibly caring and conscientious dog owner - just looking at the lengths you have gone to for these pups. If it wasn't for you, the whole litter (and the mom) might have been lost - not that it makes this loss any easier. Sending lots of positive thoughts your way.

As I'm sure you know, sometimes you just can't catch a break with life. It sounds like you have been doing all you can for these pups, which is a hell of a lot more than most would and a lot more than one could ask for. I'm sure this is especially difficult, considering you likely had a stronger connection to that particular pup, but that is the past and you can't change what happened.

Again, try not to beat yourself up too much. You did all you could, and unfortunately life just shat on you. Fortunately, however, these bad times make the good times in life that much sweeter. It will be difficult, but try to find the silver lining.

At 6 am I went out to the garage/barn to find her near death due to a snake bite. By the time I located the snake, removed the rest of the dogs, and started for the vet (6 hr. round trip) the hemo-toxin had caused so much tissue damage and swelling she succumbed to the ordeal. What you all did not know was she was my pick to keep. Life sometimes just sucks! It is for many complicated reasons that as hard as I have attempted to keep them safe...I could not. It is a bad year for snakes. I feed wild birds, they drop seeds, rodents come, snakes come. When I see a rattler I will catch and haul it off many miles. This year I just shot them but they just keep coming. I have trained the adult dogs using a big Gopher Snake to fear snakes but the pups are too small and young to make this work. Two weeks and the last two should be with safer parents.
I'm such a sap when it comes to dogs, especially puppies. This makes me sick to hear. I'm so sorry!

Yet another GOOD/sad day. Blanco is picked up by good folks from So. Cal. Now it is just Notch and he is supposedly going to be picked up on 8/13. This is diffidently his worst day. No more puppy play mates. This entire ordeal has made me question human intervention in the natural world (perhaps this also comes from current world affairs). But the folks who do not "fix" their dogs are on my shit list. Emotions run strong at the moment.

Yes, if you had not intervened, you would not have to say goodbye. But neither you nor anyone else would have had the pleasure of knowing these slimy little wonders, even for a brief bit. Choosing to care is rarely the easiest road, but it's by far the most rewarding.

Thanks so much for sharing this episode of your life with us!

Notch just left with some craggers from Reno. I am off to climb. Puppies are the best at putting a smile on your face but what a cruel thing we do to them when we hand them off. No more play mates, mom, familiar surroundings, etc. The entire ordeal made me want only to rescue and fix adult dogs IF I ever get more.

Thanks for following this thread and your support. Done! Roy
