Most Comfortable Air Mattress

Hello All,

Im looking for some help finding an air mattress or other viable options.
the scenario is I have a climbing camping trip coming up. ill be tenting for 7 days. I currently have a neo air air matress with a 1 inch memory foam topper from big agnes, totaling 3.5". this works for me for a few nights but I have back issues and by the end of 7 days I will be miserable. im looking for input on the most comfortable and thickest options for an air mattress or other set up anyone has put together. my tent is a 2 person but with all my gear inside its just enough for the gear and air mattress so I don't exactly have a ton of room. I could get a larger tent for a larger air mattress but that's a last resort.

any input would be very appreciated.

-Kurt

I have the 3.5-inch self-inflating pad from REI and have spent probably 60 nights on the thing. I love it, and it rolls down to be relatively compact when not in use. Much smaller than a foam pad, anyway.

Hopefully, there's no backpacking involved as that thing weighs 5-6 pounds, depending on the size you get. Yikes! Probably very nice for a car camping trip, though.

exped synmat ul 7. Most comfortable? I don't know, but I can sleep on my side and stomach if I want to. Super comfy. If you are willing to carry more weight you can do better.

This thing is the most comfortable car camping pad I've used, seems to sag less in the middle of the pad than the thick Big Agnes and REI pads. Also much quieter, you don't get the potato chip bag sound that you do with the Neo Air and Big Agnes pads. Also, figuring out why your back hurts may help. Is it not being supported during sleep? Maybe a thinner mat of just memory foam is best. Is it from sleeping on your stomach? Be more conscious to lay on your back. Etc.

climbing friend,

do not be seeking of the comfort

sleep yourself on a bed of painful rocks and sharp needles of pine

toughen your mental, unlimpen your muscle meat

wake up in morning renewed to flash again

This should be "Most Comfortable Air Mattress That Doesn't Deflate Overnight".

That second part is no small detail. Nothing like waking up with a root in rocks poking your back or your your rump freezing because you're now resting right on the snow.

I've used both REI air mattresses and Big Agnes. They start deflating after a dozen uses. Companies cover them well, but returns are a pain.

That said, my Big Agnes Q Core is super comfy.

I have one of these and it's more comfy than my bed at home. Never had an issue with leaking but always a concern. Packs down small and fairly light. Kinda noisy though if you roll around alot when ypou sleep. Think the Q Core is quieter.

Sounds like you aren't car camping.. But if you are the exped megamat is pretty much the best pad money can buy and it fits in a two man tent with about 10" around it.

Very high R rating as well.

That said its huge and bulky and I would not want to hike with it.

Neo Air Dream all the way. It's pricey but totally worth it. Link

I also have the REI 3.5" one that people on here have mentioned. It's bigger and not nearly as comfy as the Dream.

Not sure if you're going to be hiking in with this. It's definitely on the bulky side. Sounds like a similar setup to what you have now though so maybe it's possible for you.

thanks for all the responses so far. to add a little more info I have 2 pinched nerves and 2 bulged discs. ive been going to a chiro but in the meantime I still have the pain. my mattress at home in a memory foam which is the only thing that gives me a full night sleep.
what I have currently is the most comfortable set up ive come across (3.5' total with memory foam on top) but its not enough long term. im looking for something with more depth, maybe 5 inches or more, that's still reasonably packable.
also ill be at a campground the entire time so weight isn't an issue, ill just be storing it in the car or itll stay in my tent, this wont be for backpacking.

Exped Megamat for sure if you are car camping, or walking a VERY short distance. I have one for car camping and we use it as a guest bed as well. More comfortable than our real bed!

Otherwise if you are packing in, I've found the exped UL series (synmat for 3 season and down mat for winter) to be more comfortable than the Neo air. I had a Neo air and ended up returning it as I found the exped mats to be way more comfortable for me personally.

I have the Big Agnes Q-core SL and I like it a lot. For me it was the lightest, most compact, and highest R-value I was willing to pay for. And it's comfortable. Maybe stack 2 air mattresses on top of each other for extra padding?

Norco 7.5/325 with cyclobenzaprine 10 mg taken together 2 hours before going to bed on nights # 4, 5, and 6.

My REI Airrail 1.5 is only 10oz, a wee bit on the heavy side, but it's the most comfy pad I've used and will keep firm for days without needing more air, and it blows up ultra fast, no need for a pump unless you have some serious smokers lung.

Get a Paco pad. They may weigh like 5x more than any other pad but they are about 100x more comfortable and will last a lifetime

Have you already tried letting some air out of the inflatable to make it softer? They're not very comfy if you blow them up like a pool toy.

If this is just car camping and you like memory foam why not get a thicker topper? Nothing beats the real thing.
