Description Suggest change

Tyler peak is a large, prominent outcropping of pillow basalt visible above the road as you make your way toward the trailheads near the upper Dungeness River (Tubal Cain Mine, Royal Basin, etc). The climbing could be considered alpine in nature due to lack of traffic, relative remoteness and the presence of ever encroaching scruff. That said, there are gems to be found here and if you are in the area it would be well worth your while to sample the climbing.

Getting There Suggest change

• Turn right onto Palo Alto Rd if heading east or left onto Louella Rd if heading west on US Hwy 101.
• Follow Palo Alto Rd (left off of Louella onto Palo Alto Rd) to forest road 2880 and turn right down the hill.
• Follow Rd 2880 past a bridge across the Dungeness river and continue straight as the road becomes 2870.
• Continue straight along 2870 as it becomes 2860 (you won’t even notice the road changing numbers as the correct path is to not take any side roads at this point)
• Rd 2860 will climb and then drop back down toward the river. You will glimpse the rocky outcroppings of Tyler peak as the road descends.
• Turn right at a spur sign that says “270” (this road is also the access for the trail up to Baldy). Travel for approximately 1.2 miles, avoiding boulders and large rocks commonly strewn on the road, to a sweeping turn to the left with a small boulder field ascending the hillside on the right. Park in the slightly widened spot on the left or at the larger pull out down the road approx. ¼ mile also on the left.
• The trailhead to the crags is unmarked and ascends up the boulder field. The first wall, Mossness, is visible through the trees above the boulder field. The next area, Tumblestone, is composed of several walls up the gully to the left of Mossness.
• Grades are estimates or suggestions. Input on grade accuracy is welcome.
• Route lengths are estimates provided to give an idea of the rope length required to safely climb and lower from each route. A single 60m rope will suffice for most routes. Verify actual route-length for yourself and do not solely rely on the information provided in this guide!
• As the climbing walls are arranged, be conscientious about rockfall as there may be other climbers approaching below. Rock quality is relatively good but you’re still in the Olympics…
• Don’t put too much trust in fixed lines, especially if you can’t see the entire length of rope.
• Hey! Climbing is a dangerous activity! Climb at your own risk. There are no assurances that the routes listed are safe and should be assessed for safety by the individual who decides to climb them. Your safety is your own responsibility.
