just discovered old dates on new textiles from rei purchased this winter. 2009, 2012,2010. wasn't even on sale. I always expected the old gear to be put on sale to make room for new inventory. I guess i should just check the dates before i buy?

Well, you can return them within a year of purchase.

what if i didn't check and said gear broke within the expected lifespan, 5yrs, making it actually 12yrs old. Which is outside its lifespan. Who's fault?

It's not going to break, and it would be your fault for using it.

As Rob said, if slings that were 6 shelf years old failed there would be a lot of bodies falling from the sky. If you climb with any frequency wear and tear will dictate retirement of gear much sooner then the lifespan of the nylon/dynema. At least that's been my experience. There is a difference between shelf years and active use, with shelf years being negligible in this situation imo. Ymmv and luckily with REI you can return that shiz with no issues.

I have had that issue when buying a master cam from REI. I brought it back and got a much much newer manufacture date no questions asked (except for the question of how i know that the cam was manufactured in 2008) Directly from Metoius Replace the slings if you see any signs of damage or discoloration, after a severe fall, or after five years. Even though your cam slings may show no significant signs of wear, the nylon will deteriorate with the passage of time. If in doubt, send them to us for inspection. Store your cams in a cool, dry place away from U.V. light sources. If im paying full price I want the gear to be as new as possible. Seemed silly to buy something that Metolius would suggest to replace the sling.

why do they put a date on it. I think uv degredation only takes ten weeks or so? I know it shouldn't break and am not worried about it breaking. I think the same thing happened on some quickdraws i bought about four years ago. They look the similar to draws i have that are eight years old. The dates i have on both draws are the same but one set has double the use. Not all are abraded the same, now i need to replace them all. PUT YOUR OLD SLINGS ON SALE ONCE AND A WHILE! no retailer in particular, i think it happens everywhere.

REI typically has good customer service. You could call them and ask for a discount on the gear if you would rather keep them. I think that's a fair option since they are six years old.

Tim, thanks for putting this out there. I'd never considered looking at Mfg dates of gear I buy new. Appreciate teh heads up man. BTW, I misspelled "the" above so that the jackasses have something else non-substantive to bray about. Regards
