I was wondering when someone was going to point that out. You make it sound like a delightful learning experience too!

The chimney protects reasonably well. I wouldn't consider it R rated. Take a selection of nuts and go to the back. I'd be more worried about pitch 2's wide fist roof.

For what it's worth (probably not much), it is possible to lieback the chimney, definitely not recommended, but certainly possible. I did it on a very cold and windy day that turned the chimney into a wind tunnel. I was happy not to be stuck squirming around in it for 20 minutes while being blasted by an arctic wind.

Also, I really dislike squeeze chimneying and did not find it that bad on the much sunnier day that I happily wriggled back there. There are much more heinous squeeze chimneys out there (personally I found the last pitch on Wildflower to be much much more difficult and it core shot my rope at both my knot and my partners knot) and I would rate this one pretty low on the difficulty scale.

Also, also, you should definitely get on this route. It's one of my favorite routes out there and the summit is unrivaled in the desert.

Hi Devin,

I'm not sure if my PM got through a few days back, but my partners will be in a big red van with a New York plate, I think it's a GMC. Typically I head for the Creek Pasture campground. Hope we'll see you out there!
