You really need diagrams drawn for you? You really can't keep up?

Hi Bill,

I'll be putting something together shortly, for both route descriptions.

Yes, I'll be using the IMPROVE THIS PAGE function.
Thanks for drawing my attention to that option!

Wow vcs. What a paranoid an old man rant. What better to crtiique the rants of others with one of your own that surpasses the others.

Why is it that those defending the route name feel like they are entitled to get so indignant over something that doesn't even affect them?

If someone named a route, "White Chicks in Heat" would you be upset? I wouldn't. It's almost as if some people want to eliminate any reference to race, and imply any reference to race is wrong. What's wrong with Black Chicks in Heat?

This. If you're black and you're offended by a route name that refers to black people, by all means share your story. If you're white and worried about the political correctness of a route that refers to some marginalized group, check yourself. You might just be uncomfortable being confronted by race as a concept, like any good old closet racist.

What, we don't have enough idiocy with two threads revolving around route naming and racial tension- you had to revive this one too?  Awesome.  Thanks.

I ask you, what does it mean to check yourself? If someone says that to me I look for food on my teeth or something not right with my clothes like that. I think it does not mean that here.

In this case I mean to first and foremost *stop* (e.g. stop midthought), and secondly to take that pause to evaluate what's motivating you to act the way you are. Why are you concerned about China Man or Negro Girl? The question is worth contemplating, because I'm not aware of either being a slur.

Really? Not even Negro Girl? Maybe at least completely not PC?

Sadly, there is no known cure.

Ya! Let's all fight for social injustice!

You're misdiagnosing thoughtless herd mentality and attributing its symptoms to a struggle for social justice. Movements for social justice don't have a monopoly on idiocy, and delegitimizing social justice movements won't solve the problem either. Unless you'd be fine with Jim Crow laws, the exclusion of women from institutions of knowledge and power, and systemic aggression against native peoples, you yourself must believe in social justice. If "China Man" for instance causes *measurable* harm it should be changed. The question is, does it?

Ya, my initial reaction is that negro girl feels a bit off, but I'm conflicted about it. On the one hand I would feel uncomfortable using negro like that (as opposed to when speaking Spanish where I'd have no issue), but on the other hand some white people (and I'm white) are also uncomfortable using the term black and prefer african american, but calling someone black is definitely not racist. I can't tell if negro is just a dated lone word that otherwise falls into the same category as black (i.e. it's a word that makes white people uncomfortable) or if there's something more malicious in the history of its use, like that other n word (i.e. it makes black people uncomfortable).

Bottom line, I don't think it's for me to decide though, because the harms would not be done to me. If I found myself trying to make that decision myself in order to apply social pressure to someone else's speech, I would need to have a very good reason for it, and in the case of negro girl, I don't have that. I would like to hear arguments for it though if you have one.

I'm glad I am not a racist so I will not be checking myself.  It would be difficult to suddenly stop thinking.

Negro means black in spanish so maybe they are mixing the languages.

Why wowzers?  For quite a while the term black was offensive and negro was used without offense. Narrow-mindedness... look it up.

When I worked in outdoor ed a black students mother had purposely crossed out African American and wrote in”black” on the demographics form. I asked her why, it seemed counter-intuitive to me at the time. She said she has never been to Africa, none of her family members had been and she said frankly, she didn’t even know if her ancestors came from Africa, so why should she identify as African American. She seemed to have a good point, I don’t identify as European American.

Ever since then I use the term “black” unless I’m speaking with one of a couple of first generation friends of mine. I’ve never been corrected.

Use negro in a mixed group and let me know how that goes.

Like someone has mentioned before, that tilde in your name is really throwing me off.

This is a strange personal comment to make about my name.  I don't understand the spelling of your name either and I would think there is a letter missing but I don't have to say that is throwing me off. There are many different names here and I know some of them are nicknames like mine.

Like is being said in this discussion, the racists show themselves in different ways.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
