What route?

I'm gessing, vandals did this, but could be wrong. Why would a climber paint a hanger black on tan colored stone. Mostly climbers paint hangers to blend into the rock, not stick out like this one does...

This is at the grey matter area off chestnut hill, where there are a few new routes (I think, all established in the past year). Considering that all 4-5 hangers on this route are painted in the same way, I'd say it was a climber—and a dumb one. There's no other vandalism at this crag and someone would have needed gear to vandal this.

Agree with Erik - def not vandals but this is the sort of work that will cause problems. Whomever placed this and the others needs a little guidance.

Maybe a "lot" of guidance?!?!?

I think that the person was trying to do the right thing in painting the hanger but just doesn't have much knowledge/experience. So instead of the default Mountain Project response of beating on him/her I think it is a better approach to provide some constructive guidance. If you want to paint the hanger and bolt while on the rock you can get a piece of thin cardboard and trace the hanger on that. Then cut that out so that the cardboard just fits over the hanger. Place the cardboard over the hanger so that the hanger and bolt are the only things that will get painted and not the rock. Then spray away. Or you can just paint the hangers before placing them but the bolt end (wedge) or bolt head (Powers) will still be shiny metal. You can get Rust-Oleum Multicolored Textured paint at Home Depot that comes in colors that will match the rock.

You know who you are: Go clean up your bolt paint. And next time, paint the hangers off the rock... Thankfully, not at the main crag but, still, a nice sport cliff, and this is a total eyesore above the hiking trail.
