Tool head weights
|
Have been overthinking this for quite a while now, does anyone have any good idea on how to add weight to the head of ice tools? obviously some brands come with it ( Petzl/Elderide/DMM ) and some nicely fit cross brand ( X-Dream/petzl ). Any one have some home made ones to inspire me? looking to add some weight to my Grivel Master`s . |

magnets + epoxy, or welding but that will probably mess with the temper |
|
It kinda neets to be as flush as possible to the tool, aka not stick out ... |

Some people ground a notch and fitted it with a hammer. You could do something similar with a grinder and a "T" shaped piece of steel for a weight, just play around with the amound of steel to put as much weight as you would like on our ice tools. Here is a post that may give you an idea of what I am talking about. coldthistle.blogspot.com/20… |

The "T" methode is great for a lot of tools, but what about for this ... |

You just have to drill two holes in the pick (note: they are metric-sized holes of two different sizes). Pretty short and easy project if you have some basic drilling supplies, and works nicely. The picks are hardened steel, so make sure your drill bits are up for the task. A drill press is ideal, but I did it with a handheld cordless with no problems. I'll try to dig up a picture or two. |

Lead tape? |
|
won`t work on the Master`s , the weights would come down more than half way on the blade... , I purchased a set of these from DMM hoping they would fallow the curve of the Grivel shaft but sadly it dosent work either... this is one big brain teaser haha |

Drill holes for Petzl pick weights, and just mount them like you would on a set of Nomic picks. |

This worked just fine on a old pair of Quark Cascade picks that I modified to fit my Nomics. Yes the weights will come down the blade. Do you want pick weights or not? You can jam the weights in a crack. Think of it as giving your pick an extra "size" to jam.dosent work on Master's master |

Put the Petzl weights on backwards above the front edge of the tools head. |

How do those masters with the weight climb WI? Not enough pick exposed or what? |

rocknice2 wrote:Put the Petzl weights on backwards above the front edge of the tools head. Maybe file the DMM weights to fit tight against the head.no room, the blade is not wide enough and the back of the petzl blade is a flat surface.... Dmm weight might be the key, master2 |

CCChanceR wrote:How do those masters with the weight climb WI? Not enough pick exposed or what?that was just a pic to show that "theres not enough room to put the petzl weight" the master climbs steep ice really well, its only downside is its weight ( to light) wich i am trying to solve |

Theriault wrote: Dmm weight might be the key,That looks pretty good. |

How much do you bury the picks anyway? Both of those look fine. Just try it if you have picks to spare, or try first on your worst, most beat up picks. You could always shave either weight to fit more to your liking on the pick. |

Steven Kovalenko wrote:How much do you bury the picks anyway? .How long have you been ice climbing? Because I often need as much of the lenth of my blade as possible, chandelired ice, rotten first layer, part of an anchor, frozen moss top outs.... many many reasons to have a full blade... not even gonna start on mix ... but yeah the DMM seems to be a good compromise on this topic, keeps a good part of the blade free. |
