Description
The "Pink Band" of rock along the Wheeler Crest, north of the Rabbit Ears & Wells Peak approximately 2 miles. Fantastic rock quality on many of these 300-1000' faces, with a couple dozen routes varying from II 5.4 to IV 5.10+. From bottom right to upper left as one approaches: Bedrock Tower, Tower of Babel (wall immediately above Bedrock), Soaring Eagle Tower, and Hot Tuna Tower. Two additional unnamed smaller towers exist above Hot Tuna.
Getting There
Excellent driving directions exist in the Croft/Lewis Bishop Area Rock Climbs guide. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for the final stretch of rocky road leading to the base of the crest; 4 wheel drive did not seem necessary.
Two approach options exist:
1) boulder-hop and bushwhack straight up Mayfield Canyon. This was the old approach as presented in the Bartlett Eastside guide.
2) Switchback directly up the steep sandy face to gain the ridgeline which borders the canyon on its E side. Locate a spot to drop into the canyon when you're across and almost past the Bedrock Tower. Fit and fast parties can expect 1.5 hours approach to Bedrock, 2 hours to Soaring Eagle, and 2.5 hours to Hot Tuna.
Pants are nice for either approach!
