Does anyone know why and how the plaque was placed up there in 1998? What's the full story behind it and the Greenman trail? Is Green Mountain (where the trail ends) also named after him, or is it just the trail?
From the book "Boulder Hiking Trails" by Cushman & Cushman: The Greenman trail is named after Ernest Greenman, Boulder's "Johnny Appleseed." Greenman arrived to the area in 1896 and planted hundreds of apple trees. He was one of the founders of the Rocky Mountain Climbing Club.

Green Mountain predates him, it must have been named for something else. Does the RMCC still exist? What about all the apple trees?

Wait. So how many people are there who did this? I just read the whole thread and am a little confused. MSL isn't the other four dudes? The guys who did the stuff on the second flatiron are completely unconnected to the one on the first flatiron?

"MSL" tagged his name up on the 1st Flatiron, and is believed to have responded to a Craigslist ad made by one of our own MP members. He's yet to be caught.

The "other" four dudes were found through impeccable internet sleuthing. The "leader" of the four dudes, or rather the person whose facebook page was found, ended up appologizing on behalf of the group who vandalized the 2nd Flatiron, and actually cleaned it up.

As far as I can tell, MSL and the other 4 aren't connected.

Oh ok. Thanks for giving me the tl;dr summary.

Why does NBC seem to be going slowly towards the Fox News methods? It sucks that there is sharpie on the rocks, but I don't think anyone is fuming over this.

Faux News has one of the highest numbers in viewership/readership. So if you're going for numbers, as most "news organizations" in the U.S. appear to be lately, why not follow their lead?

People have been threatening violence toward MSL. "Fuming" seems to be an appropriate word. I think it's dumb to threaten murder (ie throwing him off the summit) but that's what's happening.

It's a silly, small-minded and ignorant country (at times) that we're living in.

Well the good thing is this idiot must have seen at least ONE of these news stories. Hope he's not proud of his notoriety.

About a year ago I took an early morning stroll up the second. When I got to the gap/jump I peaked over to see an amazing cock & balls drawn with chalk. That sir was funny....sharpie is not.

People on 14ers.com are seeing this Sharpie Shitshow on a lot of summits now, too, like Quandary. It's a new thing that needs to be stopped.

I saw that on their FB page. It is so sad really how our society seems to be going down the drain.

This is probably more a reflection of the mass influx of hillbillys from the south (and other regions) to the front range. So yeah our society is going down the drain, but due primarily to migration.

Jason, there are many people down south here that are just as respectful of nature as those from up north. But you do have a good point. I've recently seen a change for the worse in our own areas. The surf seen in LA county is a shit show. There isn't much for respect or surf educate and the weekend trash pile up is worse than ever. Ventura, to the north has always been cleaner and there is typically much more respect in the line up. However, this past weekend, the scene in ventura was out of control. More trash left on the beaches and more sloppiness in the line up than I've ever seen before. Not that it helps much but some surf spots now post signs that give rules and guidelines for surf educate. As terrible as it sounds, perhaps popular crags will find the need to post signs that display proper climbing and wilderness rules and guidelines. It's disgusting! I hate Humans!

I stumbled across this shit while bouldering around France:

Graffiti in french cave

Luckily it wasn't too much trouble to scrub clean.

Dylan B. wrote: The difference now is (1) there are more people, (2) we have the ability to trash shit in more noticeable and permanent ways than before, and (3) some of us are more conscientious than anyone ever was 200 years ago, and that makes us more sensitive to litter and vandalism. But the behavior is nothing new.
1)More people going out + the internet to make other aware/show it off to your friends.

2) Tell that to the guys that made the cave drawings few thousand years ago….
