Yup. Those and the other photo (at Planet Fitness) are not even Converse. They are what someone my age would have called Keds, and very cheap knockoffs at that.

This photo is about the third time hands ever touched rock, close to 58 years old. Right after, my son took me out to REI, for my first shoes, for an early birthday present, "based on that performance, Mom, I'm buying you some shoes!"

This photo is framed at work, to remind me of who I am. That's what makes a climber. Lime green laces and all!

Best, Helen

Thanks, Ana! I didn't actually get to the chains, but did downclimb for the snapshot. Worst climbing photo ever. So, almost the top, about where the rope is snagged.

Surprisingly, those shoes will edge, not teeny edges, but still...

I make a point of climbing in street shoes now and then at the university gym where I set, because my routes are intended for absolute beginners, who had no idea there was an awesome climber hiding in there, until they came to college and got talked into giving it a shot.

THAT, being there to see that grin, is the very best, for me.

The route is "Stems n Jammies" at the Black Cliffs, our local climbing in Boise, Idaho. Columnar black basalt.
