I am living in Switzerland and at the end of September, I want to go to France to climb, and I was thinking of course Chamonix (Though other recommendations are appreciated). So two questions: 1) Can anyone recommend a mountain guide outfitter? I have been doing single pitch stuff around Switzerland, but I would love to do some more multipitch in Chamonix, but I am a little out of practice. I have never hired a guide before, but I have taken classes from the Sierra Mountain Center, and I felt I learned so much. So I would love to go with a guide who teaches as well as guides. I unfortunately don't speak French, trying to learn German though. 2) Can anyone recommend a hut or place to stay that is not too far away from climbing? Thanks!

Thanks for the shout out to SMC Carly! Recommended guides who work in Chamonix and are excellent teachers include Dylan Taylor, Keith Garvey, Joe Vallone, Miles Smart and more! Hope you can connect with one of these guys and do some fun climbing.

Anywhere you stay in Chamonix is close to climbing, with the telepheriques. There are many motels in town. I don't remember much from my trip, as it was in 2007, but quite a few American guide services work over there, too. ncmountainguides.com/climbi… sierramtnguides.com/guided/…

Silas Rossi, Dale Remsberg, Geoff Unger, and Marc Chauvin also all work Chamonix I believe. All the folks mentioned upthread would be good, too.

I climbed with Stefane Comte when I was in Cham last month -- if you google him, you'll get his FB page. Great attitude, super guy.

Hi Carly, I'm an American living in Switzerland. I climb and ski often in Chamonix, with guides or with partners. Below are three recommendations for guides. I have worked with all three. They are extremely skilled, super friendly, and great teachers. Kathy Cosley cosleyhouston.com/home.htm The website also had a huge amount of information about routes. Jeff Banks jeffbanksmountainguide.com/… Jon Bracey mountaintracks.co.uk/guide/… As for housing, stay at the gite Vagabond. It's inexpensive, centrally located, and you will probably also meet other climbers there. gitevagabond.com/ Where will you be living in Switzerland? The climbing in the Alps is obviously amazing. Feel free to write to me at brunoschull@gmail.com if you have any more questions. All the best, Bruno

@ Bruno Thanks for the great suggestions. I moved to Zürich last May, and I have only done single pitch stuff, and loved it. I left my double rope in the US. I would say that I roughly am a 6 ish climber. If you have any recommendations for some multipitch climbs in Switzerland, I am all ears.
