Anyone live near RRG? I'm thinking about moving there this fall for the next season or two and am looking for suggestions on where to live. I'm bringing a telecommute job with me, so don't have to worry about finding work -- other than having a phone and a dedicated internet connection (so camping at Miguel's isn't an option). Lexington seems to be a bit of a hike, but I don't have a sense of what the other towns are like that are closer by. I've usually stayed at either Linda's or Miguels when I've visited so don't know much about living in the area full time. Any beta appreciated!

Try land of the arches. They have a good internet, and a decent vibe.

A lot of people suggest living in Richmond for closer gorge access, but the roads you have to take don't really seem to save you any time. Most of the other towns are pretty small, so it would just depend on what you like. A town like Stanton, for example, is big enough to find a place to stay but small enough that you'll probably find yourself in Lexington if you want to do anything. Winchester would be a little bigger and better, but still probably not the place you want to be when you aren't climbing or working.

I live on the South side of Lexington, and find that I can be on whatever rock I want in 1.5 hours. You can cut a fair bit of this off by living off of Winchester Road or on the North side. The new gym is 45 easy highway minutes from Miguel's, for example, and is located north-central. Amenities in Lexington are nice and it is an enjoyable city to live in. I would personally not even consider living in the smaller towns around here, but plenty of climbers choose to.

Thanks for the info! I'm not really interested in living in one of the campgrounds because I need a dedicated, hardwired internet connection (sort of a professional no no to access protected health information over a public wifi network). Otherwise job or no job, I would totally park the van in one of those campgrounds and live in it.

But I was sort of hoping to find a short-ish term (6 months) rental near climbing...right now I'm doing a 6ish hour trek to the New or the Gunks every weekend and would love to be somewhere within 30 minutes of a crag.. is that possible at the RRG? I did like the feel of Lexington when I've visited, but since I'm moving solely for climbing, I'd like to be a little closer if possible and I don't have a good sense of what those other towns are like.

If you can make Stanton work, you can be that close. It would just mean that if you wanted to get to the city you would need to drive half an hour as well. It sounds like that wouldn't be a deal breaker for you!

Stanton isn't a super nice town by any means, but it does have a full service grocery store and enough infrastructure to reasonably assume you can find what you're looking for. Some climbers live in towns like Slade or Beattyville, but you would have to drive up to Stanton to even get to the grocery store and would probably have a harder time with your internet connection.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
