Walk off from v notch

Years ago I did the V notch with new partner. Once we topped out he wouldn,t rappel. We wound up walking down, arriving at 3rd lake. I can't remember the route we took but suspect it was right (north) and down. On a recent trip on Sill I tried left and down and that didn't work out so well! Any ideas?

From the top of the V-Notch, if you went right(north), you would have had to get around Polemonium Peak, and then down U-Notch to the glacier.
But that's not really a 'walk off'.

The most likely walk-off is the Starr Route, a 4th class chute that leads to the L-Shaped snowfield (on Mount Sill). It's that or the U-Notch.

Could we have gone around Thunderbolt and back down to Sam Mack Lake?

There is the U-Notch Analog, the west facing gully that goes down from U-Notch, I suppose you could go down that, traverse northwards to Thunderbolt Col and then pop over Winchell Col to regain the Palisade Glacier side.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
