After trying to get some info on the new gunks campground I finally hit my limit of being able to cope with complete bullshit.

I wish- wish wish wish - that I could simply block certain posters' posts from my view of a thread. There are certain folks who just ruin threads with incessant heckling.

PLEASE create a feature whereby I can click them out of my view and get back to using this forum for what it should be used for.

Think of the "Hide" feature on facebook.

Is there not Gunks.com?

Not really, anymore. The site hasn't been maintained in many years, despite hollow promises from the webmaster, and is down to perhaps 10 or fewer barely active users.

The gunks.com home page says it all:

Not Found

Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn't here.

Damn. That was a good local forum. I read the whole Gunks campground thread and actually found it pretty informative as well as entertainingly full of strong opinions about the Good Olde Days and such.

Yeah, that campground post is just one example.

It's not just an issue when pertaining to any one locale, more of an across the board issue of rampant, argumentative trolling that forces one to sift through unreal amounts of choss just to gain the pertinent info.

A bigger issue is that there are people with relevant info/experience/opinions/etc who choose not to contribute to the forum because they don't want to deal with the infantile aspects.

You can't get jerks to stop jerkin' it but if we could "hide" all posts by a given user from a given thread it would make it all the more relevant and enjoyable for everyone involved except the person being "hidden".

In the case of the one thread I mentioned, it would save two pages of garbage.

Not only could we skip all the BS, but it would encourage others who have something useful to add to go ahead and add it, making this site (which I am a fan of, thankful for, and care about) a more pleasant and more informative one.

My opinion, take it for what it's worth...

Filtering select posters would be an excellent feature, much better than moderation.

Does anyone have an example of a forum that does this? I'd like to see how they display the hidden posts.

I'm gonna have to check supertopo out.

phpBB® Forum Software © phpBB Group has a feature called Friends and Foes. If you add someone as a foe, phpBB says: "Foes are users which will be ignored by default. Posts by these users will not be fully visible. Personal messages from foes are still permitted. Please note that you cannot ignore moderators or administrators."

I've not played with it, so I don't know what the display looks like. The forums at firsttracksonline.com use this software if you want to sign up for an account and experiment.

TGR has this function.
It shows a regular post with text replaced by "you have chosen to ignore this poster" or something of the sort...

On the Yahoo! Finance boards you can ignore any users of your choosing. Doesn't help too much with the spambots but does help for certain legit users who keep posting nonsense.

An example of what the results look like, it grays them out and doesn't display the contents of the post in the thread anymore.

Yahoo finance forums are useless God-awful cesspools. I wouldn't categorize anything about them as successful.

There's also the Reddit upvote/downvote system. It's a little disorienting at first, but for specific questions it works very well.

He asked for an example of what hidden posts look like and I provided it. Never said Yahoo boards were currently "successful".

15 years ago certain boards were useful, now they're mostly useless, except for the occasional entertainment.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
