Our party of three hiked up the trail and came into this scene at the foot of the wall. O slow team was locking up the second pitch as another sat directly below them at the top of P1. We were at the end of the line of four other teams hanging around at the base. The spring was barely there, and it took an hour to fill a gallon jug, but we'd carried our water in, and knowing that our time on the route was not to be, we drank freely. I knew about the one short route at the base, "The Final Exam", 5.10d fists, so we borrowed all the wide stuff we could and knocked off that pitch in the setting sun. The bivy was magical with that titanic vertical wall shooting up and filling half the sky, and it radiated heat for much of the night. We ate our food (Food was what forced us to retreat...we had enough for three days, but not five) and retraced our steps back down the trail. We were in The Valley for another week, knocking off a string of terrific free routes, and whenever one of mentioned the RRoHD, we called it "Half Dumb", but that had more to do with us than the least we got in some serious cardio, right?
