I recently found out I'll be moving out to Ft.Rucker, near Dothan AL, towards the end of this summer. I was curious if there's any climbing near by? Browsing the route guide it looks like it's pretty isolated within a few hours... Any other recommendations for other things to do? Thanks!
Thanks for the replies, i figured the outlook was looking pretty dim. I'm headed out there for the helicopters and am very stoked. I'm sure that'll keep me busy, and hopefully my stay will be kept to a minimum. As far as my free time goes, it looks like it might be time to dust off the golf clubs and get better at fishing...
Spent a lot of time at Rucker. There is actually a climbing wall in the Fortonberry-Colton gym right by the 1st WOC chow hall on Skychief; I'm guessing you'll be spending some time there. It's a small wall but there are probably 20 or so routes on it, with regular top rope set-up and three auto belays. Can't say that the routes are of the best quality but at least you'll be able to keep your climbing muscles warm. The closest outdoor climbing is 2-3 hours away, in Northeast Alabama. I haven't climbed there but have heard good things about it, especially HP 40 and Little River Canyon.
