Should I rack cam hooks, grappling hooks, and pecker pitons? When I try to rack them next to everything else (cams, nuts, slings, etc), they get caught on everything and general chaos ensues. Does a bag work better? Should I just rack them on a long sling so they hang below everything else?
Great question. For years I racked on the sling in front of cams and nuts but this sucks of course as they hook and tangle everything.
When I climbed the Shortest Straw my partner (Brian Sadowski) showed me a brilliant arrangement. His technique is to clip all the hooks to a small loop of 6ml cord and suspend it from the back of your chest harness. So, when not in use the hooks are behind you and out of the way. They hang down maybe to around your waist. When you need to use them just sweep your arm around and pull the cord from behind your forward. Brilliant really. I think we duct taped the knots on the cord to keep them from accidentally coming untied and thus losing all the hooks.
