Peter drilling his first bolt on lead. The rock over on this side of Suicide is iron-hard, and Hayes broke a bit in the hole, so he had to change out bits and start all over again. He dd not have a blow tube, so as the hole got deeper, the drilling became more difficult, and the steepness of the rock at that stance required constant attention from simply pitching backwards off the tiny ledge. The temps were getting into the high 80's, so once he was done he lowered to the dirt. Exhausted, and discouraged by both the poor quality of the bolt he'd left (a 1 1/2" long x 1/4" Leeper button head that was a "spinner") and the ever increasing difficulties that looked to be next, Peter and the partner who brought him to the route, Mike Jaffe, left. Hayes never returned, and moved away a week later to start a river guiding lifestyle that would last for 18 seasons.
