Access Issue: Do not climb on fenced off cliff areas! Details

Parts of the Ke Ala Hele Makalae ("The path along the coast") bike path include short, chossy dirt cliffs that are fenced off to keep tourists from pulling rocks onto the path. Stay off!

Description

Along the Kealia bike path rests about two dozen V0- to V2 boulders ranging from 5' to 15'. None are of high quality, but with eliminates you could easily entertain yourself for an afternoon.

You can access the shoreline simply by scrambling down from the bike path. Navigating along the boulders might be a little slippery. I would not recommend going down if it's a high surf day. I know that in the winter the waters are more dangerous so if the rocks look soaked, stay away.

The main bouldering area begins at the crumbly old pier and continues down to the next beach (Donkey). As you get closer to Donkey, the number of and size of the boulders begins to decline.

NOTE: Do NOT climb on the chossy cliffs that are fenced off along the bike path!!

Getting There

Take Kuhio Hwy 54 from Lihue to Kapaa. After you pass Kapaa, on the right you will notice Kealia beach with a bike path running along it. If you're traveling by car, park here and take the bike path north. After a mile or two you will start to notice the boulders down along the shoreline.
