You can find some guides and info about the climbing in Puerto Rico here.

The gang Adventuras is pretty cool as well.

As mentioned, the surfing is good as are many of the mountain biking locations.

Just an update, I checked out the Rosario area in southern Puerto Rico. Great sport climbing, fun rock with lots of features. It was easy to download a guidebook and find info (thanks again Adam and Eric). I recommend to anyone thinking about going!

Hi.

I might be in PR the second week of Feb and would love to get out climbing one day. Does anyone have a reccomendation on what the best spot would be if you had to choose one. I saw Rosario has multipitch, which I would favor if it is good.

Anyone know any partners, or going to be there?

Thanks!

Hi Nina!

My girlfriend just got back from an amazing climbing/beach trip in Puerto Rico. Before we left I did a ton (read: way too much) of research on the climbing areas PR has to offer. For the short version you can click this link and scroll to my last post for a brief trip summary.

For a more detailed account:

Puerto Rico is an amazing place to climb and it's only going to get better. The small climbing community is stronger than steel and are all around great people. Please be sure to stop at the local climbing shop if only to talk to the most genuine and out-of-this-world friendly local climbing developers, Rossano and Edda.

The link I provided above does have a link to the guidebook they sell for Bayamon II but I encourage you to spend just $5 at their online store or in the physical store where they will give you even more detailed information not found in the guidebook. Their store's website: aventuraspr.com/ All sales from the guidebooks go directly to the maintenance of the 4 climbing areas. Which brings us to...

Bayamon II - 20-30 minutes from San Juan and you are on the trail for the short uphill approach. The largest of the climbing areas in Puerto Rico. All single pitch limestone sport in a very jungle setting. Many of the bolts here have seen better days and is the last of the 4 areas to be updated with new bolts. When the new bolts are placed this place is going to be unreal. Personally we were very cautious the day we visited Bayamon II, except for Sector 0 (Ground Zero) which has brand new shiny bolts where we had some fun whips! If you are short on time and do not feel like driving, this is a good stomping ground. 5.6 to 5.12d? Maybe higher.

Cerro las Tetas - About 1 hour from San Juan. Be sure you have a high clearance vehicle to access the path where you will park. We had a tiny car and put a nice crack in the bumper getting out. Sport on Basalt which feels like sticky granite. Fun routes with one killer multi pitch Lizard the Wizard - We only did the first pitch and the view was unbelievable I can only imagine the view from the top. Warmup routes start at 10a and get harder from there. As always wear a helmet but here it is a must, no joke.

I cannot review Rosario but I have heard mixed reviews.

We are already planning on our return trip (maybe even in March) and will be heading straight for Caliche when we land.

Misc Info:

-99% of the time you will have the walls all to your self
-insure your rental car (if you have a visa card you automatically get rental insurance
-Sprint and AT&T are great in PR but Verizon is very bad
-print out directions in case your gps fails
-I will update this more if I think of more things

Informative blog:

A great blog not just for PR - we may use it for Ten Sleep as well

despite what the blog says DO NOT USE THE BATHROOMS AT BAYAMON - while we were there at least the power was out and I cannot unsee what I saw in there...

My girlfriend and I are going to be in PR March 1-7 and can climb anytime from the 2nd to the 6th. I'd love to just pack my harness and shoes. Anyone willing to show us around and share a rope there for a day of climbing? I'll have a car.

What kind of accomodations can be found for climbing trip there? Is there camping available close to crags, or would i have to book the hotel in San Juan and drive from there?
Thank you,

Not sure about camping at Enrique Monagas park (Bayamon 2). Contact Acampa or Aventuras Tierra Adentro - they should know. It seems like I've seen tents there, but those might have been groups with permits. I've stayed at quite a few hotels around PR, and can recommend two. San Miguel Plaza is nice (for PR), basic, and 5 min from Bayamon 2. A new favorite is the Dreamcatcher Guest House, in Ocean Park. Fun hostel vibe, in a quiet neighborhood. Prob 15-20 min from Bayamon 2, once you find your way through the highway maze, and if traffic isn't too bad. Not sure about parking @ Dreamcatcher - worth checking on that.
For a full cultural experience, you could spend a night in Old San Juan, too. Parking's tough there, unless you use the big parking garage.
As for other crags, you can do Ciales + Cayey in day trips from the San Juan/Bayamon area. For Rosario, it's probably worth finding a place to stay on the west coast. Rincon has plenty of accomodations, and with the surf scene, attracts lots of statesiders + other non-locals. I've also stayed at a place in San German, which is closer to Rosario, and is a college town. The hotel was... Eh.
Have fun!

Jedeye is the pro but I will add both our Jan and March trips there this year we used VRBO.com. Jan we stayed in San Juan, March was Miramar. Both great but Miramar was way cheaper, we also had 7 people in March opposed to 2 of us in Jan. Have fun and drink lots of water!!!

Looking for climbing partners and climbing information. Staying in San Juan December 22,2014 through the evening of January 1, 2015. I have lots of experience. Can still lead an easy 5.10 sport route. Have climbed every where from Portero Chico to Red Rocks Canyon, JT, New River Gorge and the list goes on.
