Looking for Red River Gorge trad partner(s)/teacher(s) March 1-8/springtime

Hi all,

Posting a shout-out to any and all who want to climb at RRG anytime between March 1-8 (I'm new to this part of the states--how is the weather in RRG in early March?), or some weekend between then and the end of April. I'm a friendly easy-going climber who just moved to Ann Arbor Michigan from Southern California.

Before I moved to MI I acquired a brand new, mostly full rack that I am dying to get some good use out of this year. However, I've only used the rack a few times, and my anchor-building skills are amateur at best.

What I'm trying to say is that I want to find some climbers who'd be game to be a trad mentor/teacher for me that week in March (or subsequent weekends). In return I'm great company, can cook/buy some Miguel's pizza for people, and I have all the gear we'll need.

When I was at the Red last October I was climbing (some on lead) in the 5.6-5.8 sport range. My trad goals are 1) practice good gear placement, 2) learn what makes for a good anchor, and 3) take some lead falls. So, basically, most trad elements.

If you or someone you know is up for a trad RRG trip later this spring, please let me know.

Thanks.

Lucas

Awesome--thanks a lot for the responses. Heath, I'll definitely let you know what days I'll be at RRG once we get closer to spring.

1) Anybody know for sure the opening dates for Miguels? My computer won't let me access facebook to check it out. 2)..it's fucking coold in early March, could still be snowing with winter storms. 3). Also anyone know the dates for Red River Reunion fest , the official 'spring' opener for climbers there? My guess is during the early spring break' of lots of schools, about 22nd or 29th of March....that's when to show up there!

it snowed and had sub freezing temperatures last year in mid-late march, but every year is different around this time. Just a heads up because I'm sure a million college-gumbies will be converging on miguels around then and freezing their feet off.

When I was there a few years back it was chili outside, and it rained a 3 or 4 days during the week we were there. However, when the sun was out, it was perfect climbing. Total crapshoot, like others have said.

This is all great to know. Sounds like we'll have a better idea of dates as those months approach. Will definitely be in touch.

Lucas, If you hire a certified guide for a day, or better yet a few days, you will gain confidence, skill and knowledge. Yes it will cost you some cash, however the gained skills, knowledge and confidence will pay dividends for a lifetime. Or you can hook up with climbers and hope they know what they are talking about. I have hired Jim Taylor for AMGA courses. He is from the New River area. He will travel to the Red.
have fun and be safe,

It's so frickin' cold this winter, so I'll just say it: Even in March.

Surprisingly not true these last 10 years or more. I used to spend spring break up there, but now go to RRG instead. This year? Too early, I remember freezing and not doing much last year when I went down at end of March for RRR event at Miguels. Thinking more of an Easter week trip this season. Rock and cold doesn't work for me anymore,,,just ice climbs and cold.

The weather is a toss up that time of year, In my 30yrs of climbing in the gorge I have seen it 70 and 25 with snow in the same week.Go for it!

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. Looks like it'll be a fun spring at the Red whenever the weather decides to get better.

Yeah it's looking to be a long slow wicked winter for all of us. Now let's wait for the OFFICIAL weather prediction from the groundhog on Superbowl Sunday as to what we can expect for the next 6 weeks; winter continues with cold and snow, or a nice meltout and early spring. Always trust your local marmot, woodchuck or groundhog for up to date and accurate weather information.

Hey Lucas,
I live in SW Michigan and have been getting restless when it comes to planning/making trips down to the Red as soon as the weather shapes up. Let me know when you're trying to make trips down there, it'd be nice to maybe carpool to save gas and share the driving. Let me know , I'm down for anything either sport or trad, have a lot of gear myself so we would be covered. Erick

Long slow wicked winter!? I was climbing at the Red pretty much every weekend in January. Looks like we're going to be stuck in a bit of a polar vortex at the moment though.

Brought back a year old thread to talk about weather at rrg?

For some reason didn't see that it was a year old. But yes, weather down here has been great this winter! ;)
