Cool idea! Why not put the camera on an intervalometer and combine the photos in Photoshop using the "screen" blending mode. You'll still achieve the star trail effect and the "topo" headlamp line, but can limit your exposures to something more reasonable, say 30-45 seconds.

It was a while ago that I created this but I would guess I probably felt it was more pure to capture it as a single exposure. Though I stack regularly now. Guess I've gotten over how much I hate gaps which generally seem less prevalent with a mid length exposure. Also it's really the only way to have a person (especially one in action in the shot without just compositing them in.

The idea is a star trail topo of stolen chimney. I did a 2.5 hour exposure. I'm going to shoot it again because it is not what I was looking for. It's not bad so I figured I'd share it. The sky went green on it's own during the long exposure, perhaps it was some aurora borealis (not likely, I think I would have noticed it, but cameras can capture color that we can't see) or maybe a hot sensor, or my polarizer filter caused it, I really don't know.
