Shelf Road Camping

Does anybody know if there is camping nearby Shelf Road outside of the established areas? It seems that the main camping areas are closed and was hoping to go there with a group this weekend. A friend suggested camping right outside of the gates, but I'm not sure that would be a wise idea. Thoughts?

Last weekend a bunch of people were camped at the bank, but the bathrooms are locked.

Our Yurt above Cactus Cliff is still available the weekend of October 19th.

The BLM has closed all the campgrounds, locked their gates, and locked toilets at Shelf as part of the Federal Shutdown.
If you visit show some consideration, dig a hole, bury crap, and put a big rock on top so dogs don't dig it up. Thanks!!! It could get nasty there pretty fast with the numbers visiting if we don't take care.
(Someone, unkindly, left their mess behind the Cactus outhouse already... disgusting!!!)

People were camping at Sand Gulch even though it was marked closed.

We camped at Sand Gulch last weekend. It was packed. The bathroom there was open luckily. If they close the bathroom, it'll get ugly fast. Bring a shovel just in case.

Even if they don't close the bathroom, it'll likely get ugly as it probably won't get pumped out. At a minimum, bring a shovel, bury your feces and pack out your used TP. Better yet, be an awesome outdoors steward by using wag bags and packing your poop out.

We are camping there this weekend. I think we can handle using the woods if need be, since that is just about every other primitive campsite in the national forest I have ever camped in. I'm just glad they haven't tried to chain up the whole area.

Thanks for the information. If we do go, we'll be sure to take care of the place.
