I hate to be offensive guys, but if you have to ask these types of questions you seriously are not ready to be sport rappelling outside. You need to hire a competent guide and get some real experience before you get yourself killed.

Sport rappelling, especially at these grades, is not something you can learn on the Internet. I suggest you buy Freedom of the Hills and read it cover-to-cover before you attempt any more sport rappelling.

Like I said, not trying to be a jerk, I just want to see everybody stay safe out there.

AMGA certified guides for this sport are few so far,,so be sure to check credentials carefully before 'sportpelling' your way into the car-to-car record books in the weeks ahead. Be sure to plan on taking up all the best walls at the Red this fall when the lame sport climbers are wasting time on their hard projects....'sniff,,,,yeah, stuff we can claim first if we plan ahead now. ( Do the sportpellers at the Red stay at LOTA or quietly hide in the back woods at Miguels?)

I'm confused. You mean labor day weekend, right? I don't want to wait another 9 months to do this.

The roster is filling up pretty fast for next week's clinic. Hurry up and sign up!!!

I have been competitively sport rappelling for 15+ years, hold two international titles, a FRPRA certification, and over 50 first descents. I'll be covering such basics as:

-fundamental anchors
-classic abseiling

to more advanced techniques like:
-the japanese tango
-extreme anchors/anchors on the go

Also, be sure to stick around for the video presentation at the end where I will be promoting my upcoming clinic for the fall:

Sport Simulrapping: the race no one wins

Check it out & thanks to those of you who have already signed up!

John Marsella wrote:Is it OK to wear my "Rap Certified" gym tag on my harness when I go outdoors-rappelling? I don't want to look too much like a noob/tool, but at the same time I want others around me to know that I have been deemed a safe and competent rappeller. A related question: In my Rappelling Gym, they have different colored tapes for the different difficulties of rap lines. At the crag, is it easy to pick out the 5.7 raps from the 5.10 ones (I don't want to get in over my head), or should I consult the Front Range Descents guide someone mentioned up-thread?
Good question. I'd say go ahead and wear that rap cert' tag to let them know out there on the rocks who has REAL experience. Our rap-only section of local gym has different diameter and makes of lines for difficulty. Thick double 12mm.static lines to push through your cave stack, and even thin single line 6mm for speedy descents on the mini 8's. What an incredible rush it is!

I'd say it's winner takes all.

Advanced Rappelling techniques

Advanced rappelling technique. Please unless highly experienced only do this with a rappeller that has been at it for decades and still carries around 20 non locking ovals biners.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
