I'm going to be in Waterville NH over the weekend and I'm looking for an easy beginner route/area. Sport or Trad but something very short where I can set up a toprope would be best. This is absolute beginner day including teaching belay technique. Given the 80 lbs difference in us teaching lead belay technique the is out. Suggestions appreciated, degrading comments only appreciated if they are original.

I think your best bet would be to go to Sandwich Notch. There are TR possibilities near the 05. Pulpit Rock Area, either on the rock itself or the wall behind it. Also, the 02. Brilliant Corners area has TRing opportunities.

The other option would be Dickie Ledge, but I wouldn't necessarily call that a beginners area. Though there are some easier pitches, most of them are multi-pitch climbs. The shorter routes tend to be more difficult.

For teaching a total beginner, I think you really want a third person, so I would try to go to a place where you could hook up with other friends. Popping down to Rumney is another option. Even if nobody else you know is there, there are enough people around you could likely get a belay to get up to set up a TR.

So I use to go to Waterville Valley for a retreat every year. So everywhere you go this weekend in the area you and your partner will be bug bait - especially at Sandwich Notch since it's next to a still but pretty stream. At Sandwich Pulpit will be your best bet if you do go. Don't even try to head out to Dicky unless you have yourself covered head to toe in netting.

So having said that I say just go to Rumney - it's like 1/2 hour drive. At least there are other targets for the bugs and it's not as bad there this time of the year.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Given the weather it might be a moot point but at least I have some options now. Looking through Secrets of the Notch last night I noticed a microcrag at Artist's Bluff (Monalisa) that might work to. Very easy stuff but would make a good diversion between hikes if it dries out.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
