Donations for John Long

This is most disturbing. Should I cancel my Paypal transaction?

The PP recipient is kgoodsitt@msn.com (name given as Krista Goodsitt, which does indeed conjure up images of a lap dance).

I sent Ms Goodsitt the following email:
As you may be aware there is some serious skepticism growing online re. your Chipin solicitation. Please respond to this with more information about yourself and evidence that you are indeed affiliated with JL in some way. A public statement by him to that effect would be great; to date he has denied this effort 100%. Else I will retract my contribution.

Hold off on that cancellation, Mike. Krista just contacted me.

"Krista Goodsitt

Hey there, John is aware of it he just didn't realize exactly what it was and how big it was going to get. I'm having dinner w him tonight and am going to explain it to him and see what he wants done with it. I will close it depending on his wishes. All the money donated is going straight to Largo, we decided to start it when we realized he is going to be in the hospital over a week.

His daughters also got emergency flights from out of the country, so the fund was set up to help with odds and ends and co pays and such. I have no problem posting all of the donated funds and the final check to John right now the funds are in a pay pal account that I set up. I totally understand that lots of chipins are fraudulent so any questions people have I will gladly answer. I hope this helps explain it.

Did I answer all your questions?"

I've been talking with Krista on and off all day now. I'm pretty convinced it's all good. We talked about better ways to present this sort of fundraiser in the future to prevent misunderstandings, too.

This whole thing sounds like a bad email from out of the country, asking for a checking account to send me money. Stitch, stop passing on the information. Largo said to STOP all transactions, let it go. Lap dance for dinner? And his initial response (John Long's) was deleted, fishy shit going on here.

Stitch, did I just read Krista Goodsitt. Holyshit, you can't make this shit up. I'm afraid to google, I'll have porn all over my computer, maybe Camhead can help. This is hilarious. Is Stitch a real person, or a troll?

Two common spelling errors in one sentence. Impressive. Maybe you should go repelling for greater affect.

Two trolls to cull here it looks like. Both were flagged.

Russ explains the problem with ChipIn pretty well:

"To add... It is a shame, sort of, but maybe not that all this suspicion is on this well meaning gal, if that is what she is. But, this whole ChipIn widget is pretty sketch in itself. It is really just a false layer of legitimacy in front of a paypal account.

Much like a blog post or even a web page, you can make it all flowery and heartfelt, with ZERO checks and balances as to authenticity. It is a glorified redirect to a paypal link. Let's say you hear of something happening to someone like Largo or Whitney Houston or Liberace, or some other luminary... within 5 minutes you can set up a page asking for money to buy flowers or lap dances or whatever and people will for sure start sending you money.

You can pop in some pics, say you are family, say you are a cop or a fireman, and on and on. Read about some of the scams on Google. It is pretty widespread. "

Update from Supertopo:

"Spoke to John and Krista tonight. Krista is not a scammer, she is a friend of John and she was kind enough to take immediate steps to help him. She deserves our thanks.

Krista wanted me to assure everyone that the money collected by her will go to JL as intended, for purposes such as defraying his kids' travel expenses to be with him in the hospital. Not a penny for lap dances, either, much as that might cheer him up.

But John says we should hold off on further fundraising until he gives us the word. Once he is out of the hospital, he can direct us to the best way we can all help him. He thanks everyone for their support and offers of help.

I was away yesterday, and missed all the controversy... given the situation as it stands now, I won't have any problem if one of the admins wants to remove or lock this thread.

Tim Stich · · Colorado Springs, Colorado · Joined Jan 2001 · Points: 1,520

I don't believe in removing or locking threads once they have taken on a life of their own. Some editing might benefit things, but that's it. This thread and the other one on Supertopo have become the place to go for updates on the discussion. If you removed both of them, that would silence everything and that isn't good.

That said, a wait and see approach would be best at this point.

Is this why I still use my lame figure 8? This is so sad to hear but, but, is their another JL lesson in all of this?

Wait for the press to find out.

Here is the official word strait from John.

Dear fellow climbers. John Long requested that we make a brief statement regarding his accident that occurred on 11/29/12 at approximately 8:30pm. John wanted us to confirm that he fell due to an unfinished knot, and suffered a compound fracture to the lower left leg. The rest of the details of the accident are John’s to tell.

Here is a direct quote from John, “Thank you to the Rockreation staff
and members for keeping it together and not panicking in the face of a very scary situation. I consider it my best moment when I saw the gravity of the situation and was somehow able to keep it together and receive the support of the Rockreation Staff.”

this is the most significant post/statement in this thread.

I have to disagree. Regardless of the how/why, a father of the sport has been laid low. It's tempting to dissect causation to assign responsibility/ assuage blame, but the most significant statement in this thread is (a)" donations fund has been set up to help with all of the medical costs that are not covered by insurance and to help with any other out of pocket costs that are quickly mounting".
I trust that the funds I have given will reach the intended, and I have faith that the combined efforts and donations of the on-line climbing community will not be squandered. I choose not to be a skeptic in this regard, just as I choose to believe a screamer might save my ass on a scary ice lead, or chalk might make the difference when I'm sweaty and gripped before I commit to a crux 20' above my last piece. Without faith, this whole enterprise is worthless, and reduced to a zero sum equation where nothing is risked, and nothing is gained. We're all suckers temping fate, but somewhere between disaster and the summit there is an abandon which makes the risk worth it, and it is in those precious few moments of doubt that we are truly alive. That is why we climb, that is why we give. Best to JL, he doesn't need our help, but good God, we are lost if we cannot believe we can help.

Interesting interpretation.

Let's be clear, infusing issues of blame is your drama. To me, you completely missed the point, it is not a dissection, it is not about blame.

I perceive JL's statement as a humble reminder and care for everyone's saftey. That is my interpretation. It happened to him, it happened to Lynn Hill, other variations on the theme happened to many of our climbing friends and heros. It can happen to you, it can happen to me.

One slip of attention is all it takes.

Constant vigilance.

Guess I'm tying in with a figure 8 from now on.
