Looking to upgrade my jacket this winter. Need something for long days in the elements ice climbing. I've had many jackets in the shopping cart on backcountry, but cant seem to decide. Budget is around $250.00

Two Questions........

Whats the best soft shell for ice climbing?

Do you prefer soft shell over hard or technical shells for vertical ice?

1) Depends on the ice conditions and how long you are in those conditions.
2) Read Dane's Cold Thistle Blog, he reviews all things ice and is constantly using, abusing and reviewing new jackets.
3) Consider buying used to get more bang for your buck. I've gotten several top of the line jackets off the For sale forum for way better than any sale, and they were all in wicked shape for the prices.

Absolutely, it depends on the conditions, just like everything else you do in the outdoors. :)

We love Ibex's soft-shells. Semi-windproof, water-resistant, burly and durable and still nice-looking. You will max out your budget, but you can always check their outlet online, or Wilderness Experience if you live near Denver.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
