Description

Obvious claw shaped formation on a hill top. 5.6 chimney on south wall will get you to the top.

This location was among many pioneered in this area by Tim O'Connor and The Leaping Lizard Tribe in the 1970s and 2000s.

Crab Claw consists of ryolite and is highly weathered and fractured in places. The formation has plenty of good bouldering near the base, in addition to the climbs on the formation itself. Occasionally there have been rattlesnakes midway up the rock, so be alert in snake season.

Many people camp on the SW side, under the mushroom shaped boulder the locals call 'Toadstool Rock.' The area gets frequented by lot's of teenagers as well, so feel free to pack out more than you bring in.

There is a good approach trail that leaves from near Toadstool Rock. It heads NE, skirting the base, not gaining much elevation. Upon reaching the southern slope, the trail takes a hard turn North and continues up to the base of the rock.

Be sure to sign the register on the peak and to tuck it back in its nook.
