Lake Amatitlan Rock Climbing

The climbing is in the town of Amatitlan, overlooking Lake Amatitlan near Guatemala City. Directions to this town can be easily obtained and is just off of CA-9 about 30 KM south of Guatemala City (Make sure your schedule allows for plenty of traffic). Once at the touristy section of the lake, head left (north) on a road that goes around the lake. Not too far, maybe a quarter mile, with houses on your right there will be a small parking area (3-4 spaces) on your left. The parking area should have a large boulder. On the right of this parking area is an obvious trail that heads up the mountain. A steep trail but takes no more than 15 minutes for fatties. Keep an eye out for vicious animals such as the nest of wasps in a log half way up. The trail will take you right into the lower crag where you'll find routes on the trail to the left. If you take the trail right, you'll hike for another five minutes to the upper crag. The trail is easy to follow and requires some scrambling. You'll pass a rock with two U bolts to help you over a short section.2016 Update from Alejandro Galindo:Around 3 years ago, a new entrance to the crag was built. It is a 50 meter walk past the old entrance. You go through a store owned by Julio and Claudia who have graciously allowed the climbers to pass through their land. Julio has improved the access by building an easier, well marked trail with stairs for the steeper parts. Because of this, the access is 5Q (less than a dollar) and parking is 5Q (less than a dollar). It takes around 15 minutes to get to the first sector.2017 Update from Alejandro GalindoJulio's store has been shut down and he has been forced to move out as of September 23, 2017. This does not change anything as far as climbing is concerned, since Julio's dad is still allowing us to park at the store and go through his land. However, please be VERY respectful when passing through and remember to pay for the entrance because he can shut his doors any time he wants.
