Dual sports in college

Anyone out there every played two sports in college at the same time? I'll be playing football (after an entire year off from it, and climbed instead of trained, god help me those first few weeks) but am considering also playing basketball. I don't care if they were major sports or not, it could be anything from rowing to soccer, I just want to see what someone who has done it before thinks about the workload.

I was on the chess team AND trained for/competed in the cannabis cup. Lesser known was my 16 oz. curl;perfect in form and follow-through. While I can't say I regret the time and work it took to accomplish these staggering feats, I will say that they did not translate as smoothly into my post-graduate work as I had hoped. Follow your dreams, young man!

What level are you playing at? There's a HUGE difference in time commitment between a varsity team and an intramural/rec team. My last year of university I was on a total of 7 rec league teams (2 ice hockey, ball hockey, ultimate frisbee, soccer, indoor soccer, basketball). I also had pick-up ice hockey practices twice a week and I swam 3 times a week.

This probably sounds like more than it actually was, though. The rec teams averaged about 7 or 8 games per sport, so I was probably only at about 50 games total for the season. Those games were usually only 55 minutes long too, so they were pretty much half-games. I think in total all of my fitness averaged out to about an hour or an hour and a half per day (though some days had 4 hours and some, like most weekends, had 0).

Keep in mind, this was my last term of university. My very first term I think I was on 2 rec teams and I probably wouldn't have wanted to play on any more. Time management in university is something that you learn. Study habits might change, too...my first term I went to 90% of my classes, my last term I went to 10%.

Good luck!

I play varsity Division 1 football. Considering basketball.

It's not my first year in college obviously, so I've basically gotten down the whole time management with just one sport, which is already pretty tough. I actually managed to play 3 other rec sports while I was playing a varsity sport my first year of college, second year I took a year off to do an exchange program and to climb, and then another year went by of sports, sports, and more sports...I had my choice whether to play varsity football or basketball after I graduated high school, chose football for whatever reason (and I'm glad I did).

We're actually required to go to all classes, our coach contacts our teachers ahead of time (even if it's a non-attendance required class) and they take our attendance. If we miss 1 class for anything not sickness or death-in-the-family related we get kicked off, period. That's it. No coming back.

I ran track and rowed crew while in college.
Man, I used to consume so many calories... Actually, still do.

Also managed to win multiple IM championships at the same time (Track coach was NOT happy to see my picture with the champ cup...)

Pole vaulted in small college setting for 4 years, all while competing in open AAU and other gymnastics events back in the day. Regular cannibis cup and 16 oz curl challenges most any night kept me on my toes, that's for sure. Hell, it was the early 70's and there was no such thing as sports drug testing as far as I know. If there was, most of the college teams I knew would all have fallen to the wayside with rejects each week.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
