not a nurse but an RRT, one of the travelers from where i'm working went to Anchorage and RAVED about it. she isn't a climber, but she hikes and camps and traveled all over the place. I believe she was able to get 3 - 12hr. shifts also. Hope this helps.

Hey there!
My girlfriend and I just finished up working 9 months (3 separate 3 month contracts) in anchorage. We're both travel nurses and worked at Native and Providence. There is some rock climbing to be had but the quality will be surely less than you are used to unless you climb ice or mountaineering/air taxi. We didn't bring much at all by the way of gear because we flew up and we were limited on space/baggage. By no means were we ever board though. The hunting/fishing/kayaking/hiking/camping/skiing is pretty sick and I doubt you'll regret it. Quite a few travel jobs last time I checked too. We are heading back to Vegas for the rest of the winter/spring but I'm anxious to get back to AK. Good luck and let me know if I can answer anything specifically for ya. Cheers

Anchorage hands down!! Anything you want to do is within driving distance and most likely out your back door.

Rock quality on the road system isn't that great, but there is enough to keep you busy. And like stated above the hiking, biking, kayaking, ect. is amazing.

Personally I'd stay away from places that you have to fly/ferry to (Cordova, Kodiak (lived here for 10 yrs), Ketch, Juneau). They are typically more expensive and much harder to get to other places. If your looking for the small town touristy kind of place I'd give Skagway a consideration.
