If the have the time to really get sucked into some classic literature I'd recommend the following titles:

Eric Shipton; The Six Mountain Travel Books
H.W. Tilman: The Seven Mountain Travel Books

Greg Childs is always a winner. try Mixed Emotions

For some great reading on Antactic Exploration try
Endurance by Alfred Lansing

Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer

Seven Years in Tibet by Harrar

Touching the Void by Joe Simpson of course.......................

So many books so little time.

Giza wrote:The Mountain of My Fear Deborah by David Roberts Both are often included in single book. Probably the best mountain literature I've read.
+ 100% Also for something very different, try a true story, Cold War CIA spy saga called 'An Eye at the Top of the World', by Pete Takeda. First revealed in Outside mag article back in the 80's.

As others have mentioned, On the Ridge Between Life and Death by David Roberts is the best I've read. Savage Arena is also very good by Joe Tasker. For a good survival story check out Minus 148 by Art Davidson.

Have a broken ankle, here's what I read so far:

Deep Play - Paul Pritchard ---- Find this one and read it.

White Spider - Heinrich Harrer
Rising from the Plains - John McPhee - Geology in Wyoming
El Capitan - Daniel Duane
Desert Solitaire - Ed Abbey

Right now I'm reading American Rock by Don Mellor - I like it so far.

Have Kiss or Kill coming my way.

+1 for Heinrich Harrer's "White Spider"

"Deep Survival" by Lawrence Gonzales has some relevant material.

Kiss or Kill is good. I'd recommend it.

American Rock is also good. A general overview of US climbing and it's classic areas.

Thinking about the Steve House book next.

Kirkpatrick's got a new one, Cold War, that examines the toll that obsession with climbing takes upon the individual and and social of a climber. I'm waiting for paperback and will def pick it up when it does.

Let's Go Climbing - Colin Kirkus
Hands of a Climber - Stephen Dean
Native Stones - David Craig
Upon That Mountain - Eric Shipton
South Col - Wilfred Noyce
Climbing Essays - Jim Perrin (anything written by Perrin)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
