Half-naked climber -- possibly high on mushrooms -- rescued from First Flatiron in Boulder

A climber who was half-naked -- and possibly high on mushrooms -- was rescued from the First Flatiron on Friday afternoon, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

At 12:35 p.m., officials received a call from a climber saying his friend was "not acting right" and required assistance as the two were climbing the First Flatiron. Both men were 25 and visiting from Missouri, according to a news release.

Emergency crews were able to retrieve the climber, who was treated and released from Boulder Community Hospital.

Deputies found psilocybin mushrooms -- a hallucinogenic -- on the climber who called the rescue in and arrested him on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance.

Investigators say the rescued climber may have been under the influence of the mushrooms and could face drug charges.

Also, deputies say they think a civilian may have been bitten by one of the climbers during the rescue .

If you can't handle the trip, don't take the ride.

Whatever happened to just playing video games and listening to music whilst tripping balls? Kids these days.

So a word to the wise.
If you are calling in a rescue, and have drugs in your pocket. Stash the drugs... And be prepared to be searched next time you call in a rescue.
I have to assume the caller must have appeared to be on drugs if he was searched (probable cause).

It reminds me of the joke about the mouse that ends up buried in a pile of crap, but the crap saves him from being eaten by the eagle (sorry, don't remember the whole joke). Maybe these guys should have stayed in their pile of crap situation.
He thought he was having a bad trip... now he has felony charges!

I hope AAC membership 'rescue' funds weren't needed for this.

I knew a guy back in college who did it with a friend and the friend had a bad trip and called 911. Next thing you know, the po po comes a knocking and both went to jail. Guy got 9 years probation. FAIL.

I'll add that making possession of mushrooms a felony is fucking stupid to the nth degree.

The news reports are distinctly unsatisfying; what do they mean by "half naked"? Some reports say they were rescued from the trail leading to the First Flatiron and others say they were helped down from the rock. And "may have been bitten"? wouldn't you notice?

wait, isn't that what kids these days are doing? i thought that was the problem. today's kids are going to die of obesity before they have the chance to die doing something really stupid while tripping.

Hope the kid who called it in and got poppep for possesion gets a lawyer. Any lawyer who can't beat that illegal search needs to be disbarred.

Man, way to harsh his mellow.

Here's the money quote from the article.

Schuttenberg denied the mushroom belonged to him and said he didn't know how it got in his jacket, the report said. His hiking companion, though, told deputies Schuttenberg gave him mushrooms and said, "Take some. They're good for you."

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
