Best way to deal with bent trigger wires?
|
So my buddy came off a route the other day and this is what my number one looked like when he got down. He didn't fall or even place the piece so I'm not sure how this happened but, what do you think is the best way to fix this? Should I replace the trigger wires or is a simple bendback kosher? |
|
bend them back? |
|
just bend them back, if they end up breaking a replacement kit is like 7 bucks... |

When yor bend the wires back be careful that the cable is directly in-line with the swedge. If there is a kink here it will lead to a frayed cable and you'll have to do a replacement. |

There's almost no way that happened to your cam without anyone noticing that something odd was going on, so you're not getting the whole story. Or you could just bend them back with a needlenose pliers. |

It's simple, really... |

it is climbing gear, not antique china. |

Allen Corneau wrote:It's simple, really... While hanging from the harness the silver-lobed side of the cam got caught on something (the rock) while the climber was moving up. That pulled the silver lobes down while pushing the red lobes up, thus bending the trigger wires on the cam shaft of the red lobes. As others have said, just bend them back the way they belong and you're good to go.Yeah, I figured this is what happened. Well thanks for the tips. The wires are bent back and the cam is functional. Now how do I talk my buddy into buying me a new cam anyway? |

If your friend is a climber, he should have offered! |

They're trigger wires. They aren't a structural component of the cam, just bend them back. |

They aren't even absolutely necessary, you could tie some string in place of them and pull the strings manually and the cam would still hold your fall just fine. Also, C4's have very easy to replace trigger wires, so if they did break it would be inexpensive and quick to just replace them. |
