Hey all, I'm wondering if anyone has updates on the White Rock climbing area? Is it open yet, was it closed, etc etc? I need to get outside!

Thanks

The White Rock climbing areas haven't been closed this season and are still open. In fact, those areas are probably about the only choice for reasonable NM climbing right now. The Rio Grande Gorge areas up in the Taos Area should also be open still. I heard there is now a forest service "closed" sign at the Diablo Canyon parking area.
We climbed at The Overlook a couple nights ago and it was surprisingly good despite the temperate in the parking lot reading 93 degrees. Climbing in the shade, especially with a light breeze, is reasonable. But bring plenty of chalk.

Based on this land-status map (page 2 of the pdf)
losalamosnm.us/parks/trails…
the access trail to Tortilla Flats and Big Enchilda/Estante Edge crosses DOE and would also therefore be closed.

Re: Diablo.
I took a look last weekend. There are "No Entry" signs hung on the gates through the barbed wire fence that runs along the north side of the wash, but you can still drive up to the fence itself.
Clearly, everything south of the wash is on USFS and is closed.

The available maps suggest that the wash itself contains the property boundary between USFS to the south and BLM to the north. This image is from the 2011 USGS White Rock quadrangle.

The fat pink line is the USFS boundary. Everything north of that line in this image is BLM property (currently open to access). So it appears that the Winter Wall, probably Sun Devil/Solar Cave, and maybe Styx, are still accessible as long as BLM is in Stage 2? (Getting to Styx could be problematic, though, because the big pink line on this map isn't physically painted on the ground when you get out there, so you could accidentally step on USFS land during the approach).
/BTW, this time of year, the Winter Wall is barely getting into the shade by about 4pm.

Also, from the present map data, Cockscomb area is also USFS.

Cool area with great views. Been there once, this past spring, it was hot and the approach can be crazy at times. Can't imagine what's it like in the summer.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
