Washing/softening haul line?

Ok, so my static line is totally mankin.

I don't coil it anymore so much as fold it because it's gone so cablelike. Currently I can make a rope origami sculpture about 4ft tall if I stack it cleverly.
It also fell in the sea last weekend. I tried leaving it in the bath for a bit, but it's not really much improved.

Does anyone have any experience with putting static ropes in the washing machine? Does it just clean the dirt out (which I'm not too bothered with) or does it actually soften them back up to some semblence of rope-like-ness.

Cheers,
Jane

I've ended up washing a mix of ropes including static and usually run them in a front-load washing machine in a large mesh bag.
In addition to a little 'gentle' detergent like Woolite I've also have added fabric softener to make the rope more supple and less cable-like as you describe. Cavers will use the fabric softener on static ropes and I've not found any warnings against using it in my limited searching (some hasty fabric softener treatment on nylon strength testing I did showed no ill-effects).

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
