Can anyone give me a brief overview of the camping options available in and near NRG National River area?

If you like being surrounded by drunk, stoned, unruly campers then go to Roger's. Basically a big field where you can pitch a tent anywhere you find a patch of open ground. If clean bathrooms, quiet hour, and tree-shaded sites are more your cup of tea, then check out Chestnut Creek. The fellow that runs is a little obsessive-compulsive about rules, but he keeps the place up nicely. There's probably a few others that I don't know about.

+1 -- Chestnut Creek on Lansing Rd, just north of gorge bridge. Yep, rules written everywhere, but the guy is OK and just trys to keep things pleasant for all.

+2. stayed there over bridge day a couple years ago and he still managed to keep the place fairly quiet.

i'm a fan of cantrells - you'll pass it on the way to rogers. not if you are planning an extended trip or are tight on funds because it is $10/person/night but it is very quiet with large, clean, heated bathrooms and multiple showers and as an added bonus the have a bar on site that serves some food too. it's a family owned river guiding operation and this past fall we stayed there for a week and ran down the gauley with them - which is pretty sick!
if you're on a budget you can camp for free down by the dam @ summersville. which is fine if you're climbing at summersville - but it's a 25ish minute drive one way to the new river proper from the lake.

p.s. go to pies and pints - you're welcome

Does anyone know if the 40 acres the AAC bought is Burnside, or whatever it's called, where the Rendevous is held? It sounds like it is in the same area. I don't want the AAC to get too involved in the Rendevous and possibly begin charging for camping.

Or if you need to find partners, want to meet the locals, like to walk to dry climbing areas in the rain, would rather support the nicest guy in Fayetteville instead of an OCD rules maniac, and aren't a snob... go to Roger's.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
