Camping at the New?

Heading out to the New next week and wonder if anyone could give me any details on camping out there.

I know the basics: pay for camping at the raft guide places and sleeping in your car at the pullouts...just wondering if there's any free camping in the area where we can leave our stuff set up for the week. If not, what's your preferred pay for camping locale?

Thanks

NRG goes through cycles of local yokels breaking into cars/stealing stuff from tents. No idea if the current cycle is in the "on" or "off" position right now. Point is: leaving your tent set up for the week probably isn't the best idea.

Anything that gets stolen from your tent will certainly cost more than the $42 you'll spend for a full week at Roger's. Bring him a 40 of Olde English and he might give you the last night free.

if you stay at rogers, leaving your tent set up for the week is absolutely no issue (rogers is the 'climbers' campground). it is located in the same spot you park for kaymoor and butchers branch, which is convenient. the other popular paid option is Chestnut Creek. it is a little bit more expensive, but quieter. my beef with that place is the owner is a rule slinging asshole of the Nth degree. we stayed there once and never did again. i frequent the NRG a lot, and there is not really anyplace where the free camping is "legit", other than a place up near Summersville. It is not really worth getting robbed or ticketed to save 30 bucks or whatever.

A nod for Roger's campground...

Safe to leave your gear up and definitely the best place to meet other climbers..

Hear hear for Roger, one of the nicest campadmins around. Check out the bearing press in his driveway...free coffee in the am most of the time...

Cantrell's just down the road (actually you pass it on the way to Rogers) is another option, a few bucks more (5?).

I like Roger's. Stayed there a bunch of times, always filled with climbers. Good atmosphere and Roger is the man. You can also go night climbing right there in Kaymoor. Went rafting through Cantrell's in 2009, at that time, their sites were $10 per tent and they have real bathrooms/showers, not just a portapotty and a token shower. No dogs allowed there though. Next time I go down i'll probably stay there (cantrell's) because the wife appreciates the toilets/showers/quieter atmosphere. If it's your first trip, definitely stay at rogers.

Roger's has gotten a lot louder later at night than in years past. Just be warned if you are not the social type. Drum circles suck

if you bring a ropegun, lactic acid bath at night makes a BADASS rope swing. make sure you turn off all the headlamps before you let go.

If you aren't the social type or feel the need to have some quite, Chestnut Creek was amazing and more preferred. Although camping is $9 a night if you have cash, their facilities are top notch and the campgrounds are in the woods and not an open field.

Maybe I am too old, but I actually like Chestnut Creek. The owner is odd and really focused on his rules, but I have not had any issues with him in person. The campsite itself is pristine and the showers are about as good as you can get in a campground.

Rogers is the scene, such as it is at the new. Roger is a totally cool cat and about the most friendly man you will ever meet. However, his facilities are not as good as Chestnut.

Hope you have a great time either way.

If you're climbing at Summersville or Meadow, you might try Ray's Campground. $8.50, real bathrooms, pets okay. It's about 5 minutes from the intersection of 19 and 60-W after turning onto Sunday Road across from the Exxon.

Cantrell's is nice. The cabins are only 15/night. They are lockable with a key if you want to leave stuff inside while you go climbing. They have a bar, showers, etc....

+1 for Chestnut Creek. Very quiet. Plenty of hot water at the bath house -- and clean.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
