Heading to Maui next week, first time, looking forward to the ocean, I looked on this site and saw a few bouldering photos on some sharp looking lava rock,

Is there anything else there worth bring gear for? does anyone know of sandy beach bouldering on that Island, Only there for a week and a wedding, so will not be flying over to other Islands. Any Beta appreciated

I can't tell you much about the climbing, as I didn't see much worth climbing. But I can say that there is enough other stuff to do to make doing the other stuff worth while. The whales won't be there in force yet, I don't think, but it's still worthwhile to get on a kayak and head out there and check out the reefs, the turtles (they will approach snorkelers), the fish...
Riding a bike up Haliakala (sp?) or taking a helicopter tour over it is great, and the beaches are pretty nice. Kanapali is where I am guessing you are at, but if you go north, or even Eastward around the 'top' of the island, you can find some pretty deserted beaches.

I don't know your comfort level in the Ocean, but I would say go snorkeling. The commercial trips to Molokini submerged crater are great. Beach snorkeling is good all along the south shore. South of Kihei the road is good, Makena bay is good. Lahaina area offers some good stuff.
North Shore may be too rough, try inside the reef at Kanaha. Watch out for Windsurfers/Kite Boarders - or take a lesson! Out East, Hana is great, long drive

Hiking up in Haleakala Crater is great.

Have fun

I thought the snorkeling at that black rock place was some of the best I did my whole time there. I did a bit of climbing on it and hurt my bare feet, but it was fun.

Bring shoes and do some deep water soloing at Black Rock, Kaanapali.

How deep is deep water soloing, do you have any photos of the area?

I just saw the pilot episode of the new Hawaii Five-0 and there was scene where they were standing on the beach with a nice looking 20-25 cliff behind them. Looked like some nice bouldering/TR. Where it was...?

Renting Snorkeling gear for a week is completely worth it. There's a lot to do in hawaii besides climbing.

Thanks for all the comments, Yeah, I saw those photos, thats why I posted, was hoping for something more, and I ordered some snorkeling gear already per friends reccomendations. Its just that its climbing season and hope to do something there for the sake of it.

But the Ocean is new, Surfing is surely going to kick my arse and looking forward to just sampling the Ocean and what it has to offer.

I got way into kite skiing last winter in France, so maybe try and find some kite boarding lessons.

Cheers for the advice

Was out there 5 months ago. some good bouldering on south loop of Hana road but hard to get to. Sharp Lava. Stayed next to black rock. Some good traverses but tough to get to and relax and climb. swimming in ocean with surf then climb out, not really beach side.

PS Lady scuba diving at Black rock just disappeared the day before we got ther so kinda weird vibes......just plan on surfing ...don't count on big climbing days....that's Oahu.

Have fun brother!!!!!

Ice climbing gear with warthog screws could be interesting on some of the volcanic cliffs, but that's about it in the way of climbing.

It's really not the greatest place for climbing, and there's so much else to do that what there is pales in comparison. Nevertheless can find some fun bouldering where the lava is solid, I used aquaboots which work surprisingly well on wet lava near the ocean. Great hidden spots on the S. Shore a little past the Kaupo gap store .. poke around, maybe even do a little bushwacking, you will be rewarded ....

Don't bother with gear. Toss your shoes in if you want, but don't expect much.

The beach with the boulders on the pilot of Hawai'i 5-0 is Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu. Yes, there is good bouldering there! The snorkeling down the road at Three Tables and Shark's Cove is better though.

If you dive, Molokini (sp?) is a must do..

Maui is like the Yosemite of kitesurfing. Kite beach near Kanaha is the place. The bad thing is that after you boost your first 20 jump, you will have a much more difficult time dragging out your rack to thrash up some bushy offwidth on questionable rock. Enjoy!

I totally agree with everyone on here, but if you plan on traveling to any on the other Islands there is some climbing, when I say climbing I don't mean Lava rock there are some limestone and basalt formations on the north western part of Oahu and a secret spot on the south shore of Kauai, these are the oldest Islands in the chain and the only ones that you can find solid rock to climb, If you plan on Island hopping take top rope and sport gear, Oahu has a verity of climbs the area is called Mokuleia, If you happen to go to Kauai Ill have to give you some directions there is no beta on the area but I can tell you that there is about 10 bolted routes ranging 5.6- 5.10, Have fun dont forget to eat your Poi with your fish or meat dont eat it by its self.haha :)

I lived on Maui for about a year when I was a teenager. Lots to do there. I wasn't a climber then. I have heard black sands beach near Ka'anapali is great for deep water soloing. Big Beach (or Little beach to the North of Big Beach) are great places to visit. As mentioned before, Hana, Lahaina, Molokini, Haleakala at sunrise/bike down, all great places to visit. You'll have plenty to do there.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
