I may not be able to get back to this until late afternoon. If you know you guessed it correctly, congratulate yourself and move on.
John Krakauer, from Eiger Dreams, and it was the Devil's Thumb in Alaska, right?

Yes, Chris D. is correct, Krakauer at the end of his Devils Thumb essay. We must have the same books on our shelves; you guessed my last one, too (though I suppose many have read Krakauer's material). You're up.

Also pops up with a search engine...

I did go to the shelf, while I was at home over lunch to let the dogs out. Krakauer talks about his climb of the Devil's Thumb in both "Eiger" and "Into the Wild" or "Into Thin Air" (back at work and can't remember). It was easy to remember when I started back into "Eiger."

Here's an obscure quote by a famous climber from a guidebook.

"As one drives east on Highway 62 the road into the Monument is found centered in the thriving metropolis of Joshua Tree, 100 yards shy of the Boom Boom Room. Soon after turning off the main highway rocks come into view. The most popular boulders begin here and continue in density for the next thirty miles until gradually thinning in the vicinity of Twentynine Palms."

Who said that?

Yeah, nailed it!

Page 298 in my edition of the Wolfe/Dominick guide. John Long Nov. 20, 1976

Followed by the interview with Oliver Moon.

Since I've got to run off for awhile, here's a quote to keep folks busy...

"This climbing. Perhaps, really, one was never made for it. I have a conceit that I was made for even more than that: more than to satisfy extremely one's own pride. It would be nice to feel that one could have the possibilities of interacting in an expansile manner, contacting with life beyond and outside of ourselves."

Nice!

Here's a crappy scan of the whole entry from my copy. Lots of good poop in that old guide, for sure.

Bump!

Hint? Lee oughta like this one...

Another hint? No guesses?

Ok, one source for the quote is an unpublished book review.

Sounds like a bunch of pseudo-intellectual psychobabble to me.
It's just climbing. It ain't rocket science. Climbing is hedonism at its very finest and it will never contribute towards a cure for cancer or an end to war, though what it does for ones own personal head space is unparalleled (pure hedonism).

Who said the above?

Nah, wrong side of the puddle (at least by birthplace).

Recall when Lee said, "Remember I like the old school British hard men."

"What a fat margin of safety the coward body must wrap around itself!"

Guidebook author. Etc.

Has a fairly famous quote that if I tossed out there, you'd google and get it in a heartbeat. A quote you've heard before...

Come on, wrap your nervy, craving minds around it...

Ha ha.
