A little sensitive don't you think?

I think he deserves to be made fun of. He obviously thought that section was difficult hence him saying "check out the down climb..." and decided to film to show how gnarly it was...then of course she did which was what he expected and fell then he almost got killed. Next time you think your partner might fall or is in a dangerous situation how about putting down the camera and helping her out! Him standing below the initial rock slab would of possibly prevented the whole situation from happening.

What wouldn't happen to me is getting caught filming after some rocks have already just flown my way, leaning against an obviously unstable rock, and not warning any poor saps below. Also, I'd be wearing my helmet on that terrain. The bottom line is that I don't kid myself about the possibilities of bad things happening, which is why I wouldn't be behaving so foolishly. I'm just of the opinion, like somebody else here posted, that the rockfall isn't what makes them foolhardy. It's their attitude and response to the situation. Cheers, Evan

Evan,

Your posts just struck me as overly judgmental and inaccurate with statements like:

"They look more like lost, clueless, eco-irresponisble Darwin Awards candidates."

and

" I wouldn't lean up against a huge boulder that is just resting in scree and loose dirt."

Perhaps I misinterpreted your statements. If you were trying to be constructive and/or supportive, I apologize.

As far as the video is concerned...
To my eye, the didn't do anything overtly wrong.

1. The guy stayed low while the upper person tried to negotiate some obviously loose terrain.

2. He had picked a fairly safe position below the large boulder that shielded him from the first set of rocks that came down. Was there a safer place to be? Probably. That being said, rocks came down the gully and didn't hit him so I won't second guess his decision.

3. The boulder that she was leaning against didn't seem "that dangerous". Especially considering that it was stable enough to arrest her initial fall/slide.

4. I think the camera was on his head and therefore not something I would have worried about turning off until the situation had passed.

5. People who shoot videos in situations like this are the ones that make the best videos IMO. It keeps it real.

6. We don't know where they were so yelling "rock" may not have been warented.

Anyway... I'm just glad that they weren't hurt.

Cheers,
Brad

I really get a kick out of people getting all worked up over the fact they didn't yell rock. A boulder of that size charging down the hill like that probly makes alot more noise then you trying to scream rock!
Cool video for sure, that's some bad ass red neck bowling right there!

Ohh, I like digging-why do you think I live in snow country.

Brad, I'll give you the darwin awards being overly judgemental, but that was to the fact that I didn't think they were climbing. It was more a commentary on the fact that any hiker that gets into dangerous terrain is considered a "climber" when they screw up. Apparently they are climbers, so I stand corrected.

I don't think that its overly judgemental to say I wouldn't lean on an obviously unstable boulder. Whenever I start to slip on terrain like that, I try to avoid sending more stuff down. The best thing to do instead, IMHO, would be to post hole all four limbs into the loose dirt and try to stay off the widow makers. And, yes, I've spent time in similiar terrain.

Anyway, I found the way you responded to be very fatherly and condescending, but I now know you had no bad intent, either, so cheers.

"6. We don't know where they were so yelling "rock" may not have been warented."
It is always warranted. Yes, in this case it might not have made a difference because of the sound of the rockfall, but it's definetly good practice. Furthermore, climbers have been killed by trundlers in extremely remote locations, so, considering the ease of giving a warning, why wouldn't you?

Adam-I am a badass, but its because of my rapping career, yo.

Buff, sorry about the beer.

Time for dinner,
Evan

The way that girl was accelerating backwards, she's damn lucky she got hung up on that boulder that eventually cut loose. It looks like it was pretty steep and she would have taken an UGLY tumble...

agree..the dude sure had a short vocab for description and remained pretty calm ( meaning high) for having a mega ton boulder roll past your face.

A few years back my friend and I were descending the crappy gully walk-off from Rewritten in Eldo. I don't remember which one of us dislodged it, but I remember having to surf/slide on plates of rock kind of like a mini version of what happened in the video. Pretty sure we yelled rock though...
