Is it wrong to keep track of your climbing stats?

rhyang · · San Jose, CA · Joined Jun 2006 · Points: 620

I keep a daily training log. It's just so I can keep track of my recovery and fitness.

About 2.5 years ago I suffered a debilitating injury in a car accident and among other things had to be taught how walk all over again. The process of recovery is ongoing, and I expect to struggle with this for years to come.

Keeping track of my climbing stats is important to me, but I don't expect anybody else to care, unless they are thinking about climbing with me. If they know what I've done, then they can have a rough idea of what my abilities are / aren't.

You people are a bunch of narcissistic, egotistic, vain, simpleminded, number loving accountant wannabes. Like the people on 8a.nu.-drones. Approaching climbing from the wrong way. -love the sport for the sport. What you are doing is nothing less then masturbation. (BTW do you keep spread sheets on that to?)

You say that as if it was a bad thing . . . anyway, we're all glad to know that keeping track of your ticks is something you'd never indulge in. :)

Climbing since I was sixteen I am 50 now and I have forgotten half of what I climbed and with who. Bob Kamps (used hemp ropes-old school) and he kept a log of everyone and what he climbed. It is your history, if you want to remember it then log it. If you don't care if others see what you have done then do it on MP. It is good to have a hobby.

Didn't start keeping track until 1985. I just buy a climbing calendar every year and jot down the route name. Also keep track of gym days and skiing too.

Only recently have added partner names, which, is more important to me than who lead, etc. So, no "stat's" per se. Also hugely helps me figure out what all the photo's were from.

Fun!

We should never have let these accountant wannabes had access to modern technology.
Backstabbing administrators. Merely because I'm abusive and have double standards.
Take their spreadsheets away from them

Just having a little fun with you, market! No backstabbing intended. Try not to be too hard on us obsessive-compulsive types.

i list and obsess over stats in many things in life... climbing is just one of them... i do a lot of birding and thats all about listing... in climbing i only started keeping track of things about five years ago... it started with just highlighting in guidebooks, then entering my harder routes in an online database and finally journaling every climbing day and what i climbed... gives me something to do... its cool to look and be able to see that ive done almost 400 routes at rumney or that ive done 50 5.12s or whatever stat i might be wondering about... one thing i always keep in mind is that in the grand scheme of things the lists are all pointless its the fun that counts and i dont need to write that down to remember it...

would you honestly stop logging your climbs just because someone else says it's lame?? who gives a sh!t? if that's what you wanna do, than do it... we all climb for our own reasons, either choose to be part of the flock, or do your own thing. people love to sh!t on others who don't follow in their footsteps - it's the butt ugly side of climbing. those who disagree can keep on growing wool.

Baaaa-aaa-aaa

Edit: by the way i don't keep track of my climbs, but I respect those who do...

Market has one of those subtle senses of humor. If y'all go back and read all of his posts on this thread, I think you'll find he's joking.

All joking aside, I've spent decades meticulously logging my sessions & I'm fairly confident that the nuns were lying; as I've yet to go blind. I just hope my grandma doesn't see me in the shower from way up in heaven. That's an embarrassing thought.

Oh, and if you ever decide to get more serious about climbing, having a concise resume of your climbing history will come in handy; such as pursuing an AMGA certification.

One day I will have a quarter of the points Blitzo has, one day...

Forget it -- I just calculated it.

Is there any chance of mp.com 3 for 1 point days? I can hit Cody like a force of nature; those things have to be worth like 10x point values, or something

That would be just plain weird.

I suppose I could generate an actuarial table. Life expectancy in an avy versus the bedsheets...hmmm....

I promise to keep it separated from the honey-do's --- I may be a bit blunt at times, but I'm not exactly looking to get my balls chopped off anytime soon, either.

I see nothing wrong with keeping stats on your climbing. This works really well with goals that you may have set for the future!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
