Areas with easy approaches

I'm looking for some info on the approaches to the Georgia areas. One of my kids has a difficult time with the hiking, so if I can pick places she can get to easier, I'm hoping she'll like climbing more. Sand Rock and Sunset would probably be good. Mt. Yonah was tough. Coming from Atlanta, so I'm interested in other GA areas.

thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob -- as you noted, Sand Rock is probably your best option in terms of easy approach. It's basically two minutes from the car to the climbing. Any place that's closer to Atlanta is either not suitable for children/beginners or has a longer approach.

Sunset is a great place to climb, but I don't think it will fit your needs. There is a fair amount of hiking involved, plus it's not a place where you can easily set up topropes (like you can at Sand Rock).

Lost Wall would be a possibility if the road hadn't been washed out by the recent flood; now it's pretty much inaccessible, I believe. I'd rather climb at Sand Rock anyway.

If you don't mind driving a little further, Palisades Park near Birmingham is a great place for beginners, very easy to set up topropes and a very short approach (with a little scrambling).

Currahee's gate is closed. This adds a three mile up mile uphill hike to the normal very easy approach. Most likely due to the road being out from rain and people taking their trucks up there and destroying it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
