Hey Kris,

Excellent shot. I have been enjoying your photos of the lake quite a bit. It has been a couple years since I have been back home, and some of your shots are deffinately making me homesick. keep them coming. JJ

JJ -- thanks for the comment!

There's nothing like a home crag. I feel that 'homesickness' whenever I see shots from the New or the Red. I try to go there once a year but it's hard with all the money.

I live in Madison and your photos get me excited....
They have nice composition and tone. They are very good at catching the climber in action I feel. Very pleasing to the eye... Are you hanging from a line when you take these? You must be in some cases..
All good and far better then the oh so average butt shots from below.
Plus- you are making an effort to highlight routes that are perhaps a bit obscure and harder then most at the Lake and do indeed appear to offer protection on lead after all (DL ya know?).

Burt, I made a silly mistake allowing my first impression of the Lake to be shaped by a single climbing day at the East Bluff in the Fall of 2002. I was told then this was the top rope area (cams do not hold) and had to dodge a top rope tossed on me when leading Upper Diagonal. Did not go back there for 4 years!! Dave Groth talked me into going there again and I realized that I couldn't have been more wrong. This is an awesome area with great and very responsible leads where you can't just zip it up. You frequently have the feeling of having just one piece between you and the ground.

I really appreciate your comments, guys! I try taking pics of people leading these awesome routes (it takes hanging off the ropes sometimes). I have a lot to learn and I do appreciate encouragment. I take these pics with a little bit of a hope that the guys who told me this was a "top rope area" and tossed a top rope on me (can't remember them) would see them one day -- so there's a little bit of vengeance :)

Jason -- yeah, I can't believe I spent 4 years not going to Devils Lake at all. I kinda used to think that the Pedestal Buttress was pretty much it :) Duh.

I guess I came at it a little differently. I started climbing at the Lake and was surprised that there was actually good climbing elsewhere. Now when I go back, I'm reminded of what a great resource it is.

Inspiring pics, Kris.
