In this picture, do not use the approach trail from the road to the left hand side of the Bear wall. Its unmaintained, steep, and clearly eroding away.
Instead, continue to follow the road past the Bear wall to the next outside corner. Look for a trail clearly entering the manzanita and heading back towards the crag. This is much better: better grade, better route, and even in the shade much of the way. 30-45 minutes from the car park.
It is not possible to top-rope at the Bear without first leading. The lowest graded climb is 5.9 sport.
The guidebook for the area is Wine Country Rocks, by Chris Summit. Staple-back.
NO DOGS. Stevenson State Park doesn't allow them, and you WILL be ticketed if you're caught.
