Hi there, I'm new to the forum. Have been on a few days, made a few posts so far and I am enjoying this site greatly. I was getting tired of the adolescent tone on another climbing site I was frequenting. I am so glad I found this site and I really appreciate the tone, maturity, and level of help and discussion I have found here so far.

Climb on!

Maturity? Just give it time and you might change your mind. Actually, sometimes the lack of maturity is what makes this site so much fun!

I'm somewhat kidding and welcome.

In general, I do agree that this forum is much, much more restrained than others. I have just been posting recently, but I've lurked for years and posted on the original Climbingboulder site before they started with all the registration, etc. I also cut my teeth on the old Usenet groups. Good lord, talk about a flame fest. Every discussion eventually devolved into a flame war. Each group had it's alpha males/females, the lackeys who agreed with them and supported them, the newbies who would come on the scene and get howled off forever, only to reappear possibly under an alterego, etc. etc. But on this forum, for the most part, flame wars don't end up leading to utter nuclear conflagrations. It can get hot from time to time, though, and silly, and childish (I'm guilty for sure), but it just never seems to develop the horrible flame momentum of an rc.com or alt.climbing, etc.

LOL... a little fun and joking in good taste is always a good thing. I was referring more to the tendency to seeing people get flamed for asking beginner questions. Sometimes flamed, sometimes given answers one does not know to take seriously or not. Not a good thing when you're taking about learning a sport which has such inherent risks associated with it.

Anyways, I've browsed enough on here to know that I like this site, its tone, and the people on here. :)

Glenn, thanks for joining mp.com...

I've always felt that there was no such thing as a stupid or dumb question when it came to climbing. Better to post up and ask on the internet than to learn the way I did, through trial and error.

Cheers

What about down vs. synthetic?
