Why we climb....?

I like people. I do. But there's more and more and more people on our planet every day. So sometimes it's nice to get away a bit, even if one is social.......and climbing is one of those outdoor skills that can make that happen....in a big way. Take "Abracadaver's" (Rockfellow Dome, Cochise Stronghold, Arizona) write-up at Mtn. Project. It says, on summitting "At this point you've entered a world few ever visit". Wow, sounds like some forbidden fruit i wanna grab. Now, if i could only do the things...to make the grade....to make that summit.

Because, if you're not living on the edge you're taking up to much space

had an interesting belay reflection with a partner yesterday. he's considering hanging up the sticky rubber, that this climbing "phase" of his life might be over.

this is something we usually can't even explain to ourselves, let alone other people.

i recently took some friends out climbing who had never climbed before. one of my buddies watched me lead the first climb, and when i was back on the ground he incredulously asked me why we didn't just walk around to the top of the cliff to set up the rope, rather than partake in such a "dangerous" activity as lead climbing. i told him lead climbing was more interesting to me and a better way of challenging myself, and he said "so why not just climb without a rope at all? that would be even more of a challenge, wouldn't it?"

all i could do was shake my head.

It was in my way, and I was too lazy to go around.

Damn, people, how did I get to page 3 without seeing that yet? Step away from the keyboard, go forth and BE WHAT YOU LOVE!!!!

I've been doing it for more than half my life.

I climb to awaken my soul from the perpetual dream of everyday life'

to keep my sanity

to balance the line between perfection and chaos

to remind myself 'why I still work here'

to get away from the time and responsibility that society

demands I pay

to have greater appreciation for life

to remember that the little shit doesn't matter

to feel that rush of adrenaline and shear extacy

for the adventure and the insecurity of the unknown

to feel alive

But most importantly I climb because it is what I live for

and can't imagine any kind of existence without it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
