When did the sign go up? Can we assume they were illiterate?

News from the Las Vegas Climbers Liason Council.

Recently there have been several people ticketed and even towed from this area road. The rumor we have heard is that it is illegal to park ANYWHERE along this road! You must park at the red springs parking area down the street. The residents of the area have made this a private road. The people that have been ticketed and towed were done so by metro police who were most likely called by area residents.

Be warned if you park anywhere along this road you could be towed.

Wow that's just taking a big shit on Calico's climbing accessibility, just wait 'till the suburbs spring up. Sometimes I'm glad I'm nowhere near my home crag because it would kill me to watch this shit happen to a place I love.

1. I agree these people were out of line and NOT acting as respecting climbers should.

2. Just wait a year or two and you will be able to drive up along the powerlines and park just east of Kraft...some already use this option.

Thanks to Killis for bringing up this subject. Here is the skinny on the parking for Kraft and Gateway Canyon directly from the BLM.

Sandstone Drive is not a privately owned road.

Sandstone Drive is a county road, but citations can be issued for parking along it from Metro.

If climbers feel that they cannot walk the extra 1/2 mile from the Red Springs parking lot, they should consider parking along the post and cabled dirt road that leaves from the west side of the of the cul-de-sac at the end of Sandstone drive. Once this area is filled up with cars, any late comers should drive back to Red Springs.

I would not suggest following Fran's suggestion of driving up along the powerlines and park just east of Kraft. First the land east of Kraft along the power lines is private land. Crossing private property will get you a ticket faster than any other option out there. Second once you cross over the private property and are getting ready to park you are now driving a vehicle in a non-motorized area within the boundaries of Red Rock Canyon NCA and can be issued citation.

Take it for what it is worth. Basically to be the most responsible climbers should consider the Red Springs parking lot as the place. It is large enough to handle all the parking, you can toss back some beer, yell about weed, not have to worry about pissing of residents, and know that you are part of the solution not part of the problem.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
