The duct tape was gone, but the first time I climbed the hat the whiskey bottle and grenade were still there. Those things should have stayed there forever.

I seem to recall that the pin on the grenade was attached to the bottle stopper. Too funny.

Wow, my climbing partner Mark Lassiter found this photo online. I can't remember what year it was we went on a climbing tour of the west, but I definitely remember leaving our mark on Mexican Hat! We had just driven all day and night...32Hours was it from Western NC? Pulled up to Mexican Hat mid afternoon, looked at each other and smiled. Jumped on the Mexican hat immediately. While we were climbing it, some folks were playing some type of mountain Bocce around the tower. When we reached the summit they gave us a cheer. We had read reports and seen pictures of crazy things left on the summit and wanted to participate. The bat sticker represents TAG caving (Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia) which my parter Mark was a big part of and turned me on to. The Jack Daniels represented Tennessee cave water, and the surplus grenade with the pin tied around the neck of the bottle was just for laughs! That was one of the best trips of my life. We had perfect weather from Mexican Hat all the way through to the Tetons where we climbed the Grande, Middle and Southern, and managed to also get a guided tour through the Ice Cave on the other side of the range. One of my fondest memories is sleeping in the Valley of the Gods and watching the stars rotate around the towers there. Magical! I plan on returning with my young family one day. It was very special. I'm glad you got to enjoy our contribution. I'm going to send you some pics from that trip.
